PHOTO BY SHAN MOORE AMA/NATC U.S. National Youth Trials Championships Trials Training Center Trials, Tribulations & Triumphs in Tennessee By SHAN MOORE/TRIALS COMPETITION NEWSPAPER SEQUATCHIE, TN, JULY 2·4 Y oung riders from all over the United States converged on Tennessee's Trials Training Center over the Fourth 01 July Weekend to compete in what has turned into the ultimate event for aspiring young trials riders in North America. The AMNNATC U.S. National Youth Trials Championships, now in its sixth year. has become the Lorena Lynn's 01 the trials world. And it gets bigger and better with each passing year. All parts 01 the country. as well as Canada, were represented. as riders Irom Calilomia, Maine. Florida, Washington and Ontario tackled the slippery Tennessee rocks during the three-day event. Each day featured a different loop and new sections, with Monday's event being the toughest. Some of the closest competition of the weekend occurred in the II-year-old division, where Daniel Leavitt and Bo Ibsen went head to head. The competition between these two was close all weekend. especially on Sunday, with Leavitt getting that day's win by a single point. Leavitt also took Saturday's win. but Ibsen came back strong during Monday's tough event, taking the win by two points over Leavitt. In the end, Leavitt claimed the championship ahead 01 Ibsen. with Homer Hensley, Joshua Nutseh and Kameron Jenkins rounding out the top fIVe. Karl Davis Jr. and Chad Redman locked horns in the 12-yearold class. Davis won the opening day's event, topping Redman by a single point. However, Redman rebounded with a one-point win 01 his own on Sunday. topping both David Mizell and Eric Ston: by a single dab. lour points to fIVe. On Monday. Amanda [)eon Parts Canada Superbike Championship Rounds 2-3: Race City Motorsport Park McBain Sweeps to the Top By JOHN HOPKINS CALGARY, AB, CANADA, JULY 2·3 t took Clint McBain just over two years to win his forst Parts Canada Superbike Championship race. It took him just 24 hours to win his second. The Calgary racer shed his bridesmaid image in decisive fashion at Race City Motorsport Park by sweeping both ends of the Superbike doubleheader, delighting a raucous home crowd. Alter easily qualifying on pole lor both 18-lap races, McBain led every lap of each one on his 81ackloot Suzuki GSX-R I000. In the first race, he led home the Snobgirls/laval Moto Suzuki of Frands Martin by 4.025 seconds. Steve Crevier was third aboard the Diablo Performance Honda CBR IOOORR. A day later, McBain beat the Fast Company Honda 01 Jordan Szoke by 3.024 seconds, while Martin completed the podium. McBain also set the fastest lap in that race, touring the 2.G-mile track in one minute and 17.013 seconds on the I Ith lap. "Today was a big relief," said McBain after completing the sweep. "It was time I got to the front. 1proved I could do it, and I did it in style." The two wins also gave McBain the Parts Canada Superbike points lead after three of eight races. He lelt Calgary with 139 points, to I 62 the 134 of Martin, who won the opening round at Shannonville Motorsport Park. A victory is worth SO points. While McBain charged away at the front in both Superbike features, the action was intense behind him. The opening race featured a tremendous battle for second between Martin and Crevier, with the pair trading the spot repeatedly over the second half of the race. The Honda rider was nursing a shoulder separation he sustained in the Road America AMA Superbike event three weeks earlier. After a poor start lelt him eighth at the end of the opening lap, Szoke fought his way back up to fourth. McBain's Blackfoot Suzuki teammate Kevin Lacombe completed the top fIVe. The next day, Szoke, Martin and Lacombe settled into a battle for second, behind McBain. Szoke and Martin swapped second back and forth, usually with Martin drafting past on the long drag-strip front straight, only to have the Honda rider outbrake him into turn one and hold him off through the twisty south end of the circuit. Lacombe was never far behind but couldn't challenge the pair ahead of him and settled for fourth at the finish. Crevier pitted from second place on lap four when a rad overflow hose popped loose. He rejoined in 16th and charged back to seventh at the finish. Crevier enjoyed more success in the pair of Hindle Exhaust Pro 600cc Sportbike rounds at Race City. The 40-year-old veteran remained unbeaten in the class this season by winning both times, despite intense challenges from 19-yearold Chris Peris and McBain. In Saturday's opener, which ended early thanks to a red flag on lap 12 01 a scheduled 14, Crevier just held off Peris's Topline Yamaha YZF-R6, McBain's Suzuki, and the lactory Kawasaki 01 Tom Kipp. The next day, Crevier and McBain traded the lead throughout the race, but Crevier hung on to win by 0.166 seconds, setting the fastest lap on the penultimate tour of the race. For the second straight year, Olivier Spilborghs won the International Motorcycle Supers how Amateur 600cc Sportbike leature on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Fifteen-year-old Karl Daigle marked himself as a star of the future by winning both Suzuki SV650 National Cup races.
