AMA l25cc National Motocross Series Presented by FMF to put him on the podium - his third podium finish of the year. "I've been working on whoops and trying to find traction," Grant said. "The main spot for passing was the whoops. That's where I got Ivan [Tedesco] and a number of other guys. So my work paid off, because I was really sharp through that section today." Also riding well was langston. The rounds one (Hangtown), three (Southwick) and fIVe (Red Bud) winner was on fire the second moto. And had he not crashed on two separate occasions his way out of the first moto, he would have likely made the podium along with Short and Alessi. So with Tedesco comfortably up on top and first-part-of-the-season points leader Mike Brown, on the Jim's Cycle Center!Deluge Honda, slipping further and further down the leaderboard each week, Short has a five-point lead over Alessi, 281-276, with Grant and Brown just a click behind, tied at 271 points as the series heads to Binghamton next week. eN SPRING CREEK MOTOCROSS PARK MIUVlW, MINNESOTA REsws: Auousr 14,2005 IRCl\H) 9 OF 12) MOTO I: I. My OWN RACE: 8 Grant Langston 125cc 4th (10-2) Monster Energy/Pro CirCUit/Kawasaki's 12Scc Supercross Champion Grant Langston still has that black cloud lingering. But with his secondmoto performance at Millville, it just may have lifted, and you don't want to bet against a healthy - and lucky - Langston in the last three races. "First moto was not what I was expecting." he said. "I had a descent start, around IOth place, and was making some passes. I was behind Josh Grant and wanted to get around him because I felt I had a slightly faster pace than him. I changed my line coming back through the whoops and, on about the second whoop, I caught a rut, started one of those big fishtails, and it just spat me off. I came from 16th back to 10th with a twisted bike, which was kind of tough - bars bent, subframe bent, throttle sticking open - made for an average finish. Second moto, I figured the overall was out of the picture, so I thought a moto win would be a fantastic way to get the ball rolling again. Got a pretty good start, pulled up close to the front, then when [Andrew] Short got by [Mike] Alessi, he just yarded us. Mike was kind of blocking me, and I lost about six seconds in two laps to Andrew. I got around Alessi, kind of pushed, made up some time, cut the lead to about five seconds. Then, with a couple laps to go, it was real rough and I didn't want to kill myself, so I just settled for second." 188 Davi Millsaps 8th (14-9) Suzuki's Davi Millsaps put on an absolute clinic in the whoop section, going through at such speeds in at least the early portions of the moto that it rivaled anybody in either class. His eighth overall was not indicative of the speed he was carrying as a couple tip-overs in the first moto and a poor start in the second moto kept him out of the top five. "The first moto, I threw it away on the first lap - front end just slid out," Millsaps said. "The second time I crashed was the last lap, on a right-hander, trying to dodge a lapper. The bike stalled. The second moto, the start didn't go so good; I got closed off. I was far, far back. I kept passing people in the whoops. then I think the last one I passed was [Ivan] Tedesco. After that, there was a long stretch between Dosh] Grant and those guys, so I made it to where I was riding smoother so I wouldn't throw it away like I did in the first moto." 18 Brock Sellards 19th (22-13) Yamaha of Troy's Brock Sellards was back in action following a gnarly bout with a stomach virus earlier this summer. "I'm just getting healthy again," he said. "I was sick for a few weeks and I was trying to race through it. I had to actually take off Washougal to get better. It [the virus] was killing me. I'd get real, real sick between motos and could never finish the second moto, so it was still pretty tiring out there. The second moto, I got off to a good start, moved into second place and ran up front for a long time. At the end, I lost a lot of positions from getting tired got some arm pump a little bit." 132 Billy Laninovich 6th (5-7) "My day went well," Billy Laninovich said. "The first moto, I ended up in fifth. [I] would have been fourth, but [Matt] Walker went ballistic on a downhill and got by me - would have landed on me if I didn't get out of the way. I'd caught him in the whoops, got by him and thought I'd opened up a little gap. But he must've just been on it, because he caught back up to me and I didn't even hear him, and he went wide on the outside of the downhill and just held it wide open, and I had to move out of the way or we'd have crashed. Then he whipped it in front of my face, which I didn't like, so I'll get him back. The second moto, I got another good start, which I need, and ended up seventh." 105 Ryan Hughes 23rd (37-17) After missing a couple races with a hand injury, Ryan Hughes felt he just didn't have it at Millville and was not ashamed to, as he always does, tell it like it is. "The first moto, on the second lap, I was in like eighth or 10th and my bike seized up," Hughes said. "I wound up like freakin' 40th [3 7th]. I had the last pick [for the second moto] and got a bad start, and there was a bunch of idiots out there just going everywhere. I didn't want to get in a crash, so I kind of settled in and made a charge. I felt I didn't have my rhythm, laid up a little bit, made a charge again, made another charge, then figured I just didn't have it today on a rough-assed track. But that's that, and we're going to move on to the last three and then call it a career." 24 AUGUST 24,2005 • CYCLE NEWS
