August 7, 2005 SUPERMOTO ~ X Games II Supermoto -.: (left to right) McGrath, Henry and Reed show oH the nuggets on the X Games podium. 24 AUGUST 17, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS By contrast, Henry came in on lap 24, and he was in and out in 27.4 seconds. Just prior to pitting, he had concentrated on building his lead in order to lose as little time as possible while parked. "I was thinking of the pit," Henry said. "I wanted to have a little bit of a gap on the pit stop. Anything could have gone wrong there. Luckily for us it went really fast, but you never know what could've happened. I just thought to myself, 'Hey, let's try and get a little gap and come out ofthe pit stop in first.' That was my goal." He didn't maintain the Ie;ld, as it fell into the hands of the smooth-riding Lazzarini for two laps before the Husky man pitted. But Henry was soon back out front and in complete control, appearing to be in cruise mode. Henry went on to establish a lead of I 1.35 seconds. ':A.MA is more of a sprint race, whereas this is more of an endurance race," Henry said. "This was a long race." McGrath and Reed were riding it like a sprint race in the late laps, however, the two battling furiously for the silver medal. McGrath, who had made a 29.4-second stop on lap 26, ultimately pulled off a gnarly pass on Reed on the downhill jump into the stadium to take the second spot for good on lap 34. McGrath said that he had a great weekend racing X Games Supermoto. ':A.fter racing Supercross for such a long time, it's a little bit different scene," McGrath said. "It's a lot more business over there, but it's a lot more fun atmosphere here. Everybody wants to win, but I think that the athletes that are here get treated like they are supposed to. Overall, I just like everything [about it]. It's such a big thing. A lot of people get to watch it." Reed said his race went a lot better this year as well. ''This year was a lot different, a lot more fun for me," Reed said. "Just the bike setup was a lot better than last year. Getting the holeshot was a lot better. Last year I felt like I could have done better." On racing with his hero, McGrath, Reed added: "It was cool, but I would love to have beaten him. I don't get the QPportunity that much anymore." Bostrom finished fourth after admittedly wearing himself out after his pit stop. Despite his early crash, Nicoll rode to a solid fifth, ahead of HMC/ Generations of Sonoma KTM's Benny Carlson, who stayed out of trouble all day. Troy Lee Designs Honda's Chris Fillmore was seventh, followed by Drew and Lazzarini, with AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship competitor Johnny Murphree doing the dirt track guys proud by landing a top10 finish. eN HOME DEPOT CENTER CARSON, CAuFORNIA RESULTS: AUGUST 7, 2005 X GAMES SUPERMOTO FINAl.: I.
