sconsin·s Ben Carlson showed that the
night racing in Quebec could be challenging and fast. The Buddy Ford-promoted
event at the Gran Mere International Cart
Track looked to be the most challenging and
fun event of the schedule. The dirt section was
the longest and most technical so far, with huge
jumps and a dirt-track section to challenge the
riders; the street course was fast, with long
straights and tight sweepers. Those attending
the night race saw Quebec's passion for radng
on the Montreal Formula One weekend.
Some of the greatest racers in the world
were on hand, Including France's David
Baffeleuf. American Ben Carlson, and local
Quebec favorites Dominic Beaulac, Guy
Giroux, Marco Dube and Guy Rousseau.
Ontario riders included Dave Arnold. Lino
Zecca, and Doug and Steve Beattie. The stage
was set for some of the greatest supermoto
radng ever in Canada.
The Teknic Pro-Am 2SOoc class' front row
included Doug Beattie, Beaulac, Steve Beattie,
and last year's National number-three rider, Bill
Wallin. Doug bagged the hoIeshot. As this was a
night race, perception and tunnel vision became
factors, and the riders really had to pay close
attention. At the end of this challenging race,
Beaulac crossed the line with an impressive lead
over Kevin Lacombe and Steve Beattie.
In the main event of the night, the Premier
Open class, all eyes were on HMC riders
Carlson and Baffeleuf; these two riders are
world-class. The lack of the dirt section (due to
monsoon rains) boded well for some riders.
The starting grid consisted of Carlson,
Barreleuf, Beaulac and Doug Beauie. The
holeshot was a close call between Baffeleuf and
Beaulac, but Baffeleuf's comer speed soon put
the French rider at the front of the pack.
Carlson methodically made his way through
the pack to pass Beaulac and eventually
Baffeleuf, and he went on to greet the
checkers first. The HMC riders showed the

class at the Supermota Canada National Series opener.
fans how fast and exciting this new and
emerging sport of supermoto could be in a
nighttime environment. A high point of the
race was when Doug Beattie and his brother
Steve were racing for fourth place, with similar
lap times, and last year's number-one plate
holder, Doug, overshot corner one, letting
Steve and Arnold by. Beaulac finished on the
podium in third, which the fans loved.
This turned out to be a hugely successful
race for promoter Ford, considering the rain
delay. The riders appreciated the track and the
efforn put out by Ford's track team, as well as
the hospitality of those at the Gran Mere
IntemationaJ Track.
