Husqvarna's Leonardo Bagnis slamming the door on All Access KTM's Micky Dymond for second place. Then came Joker Machine/QTM Honda's Josh Chisum, GP Husqvarna's Herfoss and HMC/Generations of Sonoma KTM's Darryl Atkins. The front three pulled clear of the rest of the field rather quickly, with Baffeleuf setting an early pace that neither Bagnis nor Dymond could match. Baffeleuf set his fastest lap of the race, a I:24.921, on the third lap. He was able to put about three-tenths of a second per lap on Bagnis early. The Frenchman then cruised to his second win of the year. "It wasn't that easy, because I was stressed," Baffeleuf said. "I pushed max at the beginning of the race, and I know the track because I raced the NASMOTO here. I feel very confident." After Bagnis lost contact with Baffeleuf, he was forced to defend his position against Dymond, who was charging late in the race. Dymond caught Bagnis on lap 13, just as the two caught lapped traffic. Bagnis tried to box Dymond in with one of the lappers, but Dymond was able to slip through and stay close. Bagnis then all but handed Dymond second place by colliding with the next lapper in the fray and going down in the last corner before the finish line. "I think I got a gift from [Craig] Mason [the lapper who tangled with Bagnis]," Dymond said. "I wasn't too disappointed, because that made it easy, but I had already waited too long to try and run down David [Baffeleuf] anyway. I just kept up with Leo [Bagnis], and it was just going to get good right there when he hit the lapper. All in all, I feel pretty good about things. I just have to try to win the next one." Bagnis was able to recover and finish third, followed by Herfoss, Atkins, Chisum, Loire Racing's Robert Loire, Red Baron Racing's Alex McElyea, Yarrow and JST Racing/Motostrano.com's Travis Marks. eN USA INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY SHAWANO, WISCONSIN RESULTS: JULY 30, 2005 (ROUNDS 3-4 OF 10) SUPERMOTO RACE I (16 laps): I. UPCOMING ROUNDS Rounds 5-6: Copper Mountain, Colorado, August 20 Rounds 7-8: Copper Mountain, Colorado, August 21 David Baffeleuf (23) and Mark Burkha~t (6) remained unb~aten in the Supermoto Unlimited and Supermoto Lites classes, respectively. :Briefly... Continued from page 33 ing to make it first class," Brandon said. "Kawasaki gave us some bikes and some motors, and everything else is done separately. We're sourcing out our motors, suspension and brakes. Our Dunlop tires are awesome. Everything is working great, and we're just trying to put in some good laps and have a good race." Micky Dymond was still smiling at Shawano after having won the Pikes Peak Hillclimb and setting a new track record in the process. "A lot of people have recognized it, so that's cool," Dymond said. "I loved going up there, and I needed that [win]. It's more of a race against the clock, nothing like this. It was super fast and super cool. I loved it, and I am for sure going back next year." Benny Carlson was one top contender who probably had more time on the USA International Raceway track than anybody, but that didn't necessarily equate to a top qualifying effort. "I have a lot of laps here, but everybody's going so stinkin' fast," Carlson said. "We're not as good as we'd like to, but we're going to try our hardest." Carlson finished third in race one and then crashed while fighting for third in race two, which immediately departing Shawano after to head for a Canadian Supermoto round. The GP Husqvarna team had a busy time of it during practice and qualifying, as first Troy Herfoss and then Leonardo Bagnis suffered mechanical woes that forced them to hurry onto backup bikes. "Mine just lost power," Bagnis said when asked. Bagnis actually competed aboard a 2004 450cc adorned in red, white and black Husqvarna colors rather than the customary yellow and blue. Alexandre Thiebault was less than impressed with the pass that Jeff Ward put on him at the start of Supermoto race one, the result of which forced Thiebault out of the race. "Ward hit me 10 feet off the start and broke my front-brake disc," Thiebault said. "It was done. I had to go back to the pits, and I was not happy." Thiebault faired much better in race two, finishing sixth. Red Bull KTM's Jurgen Kunzel was relaxed and confident after practice, feelings that he hopes to sustain throughout the 2005 season. "I'm feeling better and better," Kunzel said. "I'm in a very good position after the first round at Road America. No crash. The goal this year is to go better and better. We have some new parts on the bike, and I have a good feeling for the races." Kunzel will admit that part of his problem last season was making mistakes while'under the pressure of the big names, such as Henry and Ward, which he idolized as his own career progressed. With a full year of racing them under his belt, he said that has changed. 'f>,.t least I hope so," he added. Eric Bostrom left Shawano with mixed feelings about the race. On the one hand he was happy to be competitive, but on the other hand he felt he should have been a podium contender. "It was weird," Bostrom said. "We rode here on Thursday, and we didn't have any problems. Then today I developed chatter. The first time I was racing Carlson, and I figured I'd better step it up. I wasn't happy with the chatter, but I felt like I could push through it. I went off into that turn, and the rear was chattering, but then it went to the front, and I was on the ground. I felt pretty good in the second race, but I just couldn't really drive past anybody. I would slow down and then speed up and catch them, but I couldn't pass them. The second race wasn't any fun, but it was still a good idea to come here." Reigning AMA Supermoto Champion Jeff Ward was not thrilled with his lap times in qualifying. Ward missed the front row - and thus a chance at Superpole - with a time of I minute, 24.988 seconds, which was 10th fastest. Ward blamed tire issues on his result. "I didn't have as much grip as I thought I would," Ward said. "Every time I tried to push, I kept losing the front end. I never got a good lap in. Every lap I tried to go good, I made a big mistake and lost a lot of time. That hurt me a lot. I'm not happy being on the second row. I've never been on the second row. We're going to have to do better in the race. We're going to have to get a good start to get into the top four and then just hang in there. It'll be a challenge." Ward's Troy Lee Designs teammate, Chris Fillmore, said that he was feelingreally comfortable, and his qualifying lap of I:24.075 was ample proof. "I came up here and did the NASMOTO race, and Igot a second and a third," Fillmore said. "This is my kind of track. It has a lot of sweeping turns, and it flows." Chris Fillmore also said that he is having a bit of a tough time adjusting to the California lifestyle since moving from his native Michigan. "It's good that Iget to ride all the time, so that seat time is a big help," Fillmore said. "Dealing with all the [amount of] people is a little bit rough. It's not like back home. I've experienced a lot of traffic jams but not an earthquake yet." In VDB's place for the Shawano round was KTM factory test rider Willi Reiter. "He actually works in the race department for the factory," Nicoll said. "He's our chassis guy and our chief Supermoto test rider. He has been working with Metzeler, doing all the testing of their tires on the World Championship circuit." CYCLE NEWS • AUGUST 10, 2005 35
