While Chad Reed was busy keeping his body temp cool, the concern in Rick Carmichael's camp was about keeping his fuel cool. Kept on dry ice prior to his moto, RC runs just enough gas in his bike to make it around for the parade lap. Mike GosseIaar, Carmichael's mechanic, then fills the rest of his tank with the hyper-cool gas just before the 3D-second board goes up. You'll also notice that while other racers are cracking their throttles, get- ting their bikes warmed up. RC is one of the last racers - if not the last - to start his bike. In addition, the tank on RC's bike is made from aluminum, and Gosselaar applies all sorts of insulation to the inside of the bike to help deflect the heat from the gas. The fourth annual Scott USA Pro Board Sports MX National @ Washougal, presented by the National Promoters Group, was again a big hit with the more than 26,000 fans who crowded in to see the National. The three-lap exhibition race featured a number of high-level pro athletes, including U.S. Ski team member Daron Rahlves, Olympic great Steve Mahre, and snowboard legends Jim Rippey, Aaron "AV" Vincent and Ian Price, along with a number of snowmobilers thrown in for good measure, In the end, it was the "King of the Crossovers," Jet Skier/Thor rep Victor Sheldon, bringing home the win. Sheldon was joined on the podium by skiers Errol Kerr and Jon Dadak. Last year's winner, Price, wadded up hard on the Chuck Sun tabletop jump and will have to wait until Glen Helen to challenge Sheldon. Ryan Hughes attended the Washougal race Ivan Tedesco backs up first win with second win By PAT ScHunE PHOTOS BY STEVE BRUHN th a bit of luck to go with an abundance of speed, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Ivan Tedesco was able to capture his second AMA National overall I25cc-c1ass win in as many weeks, scoring a 1-3 finish for the overall class victory at the picturesque Washougal MX Park. With the win, which was a follow-up to his first career outdoor win the previous week in Colorado, Tedesco increased his points lead over Jim's Cycle Center/Honda's Mike Brown to 41 points, as Brown was stricken with a very rare - for him - DNF in the first mota, Tedesco also received a helping hand when mota-two winner Brae Hepler lost the lead in the first mota because of a broken front-brake caliper. So Tedesco's 1-3 tally topped out red-hot Honda racer Andrew Short's 2-2 score and the 5-1 finishes of the day's fastest racer, Hepler, whose mechanical failure aided in his garnering third place. "The beginning of the season really wasn't that great Hangtown and Mount Morris," Tedesco said, "Things started to turn around for me at Southwick, and it just has been getting better and better every weekend. I felt good all weekend, but in the second mota, I could just never get it to flow, These guys were riding really well, but I was able to come out with the overall, so W 28 AUGUST 10, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS but did not ride. Hughes is still smarting a bit from a right hand/wrist injury, but he said he might be back for the next round in Millville, Minnesota. Still in killer shape, Hughes said, "I always train harder when I'm not racing." Think RC's got it made? Well, back in the day, when Carmichael won the Pro/Sport class at Loretta's and moved up to the Pro ranks for his first year of 125cc competition at the Nationals, RC pulled in $30,000 for his first contract. This year's winner of the Pro/Sport class will make a reported $350,000 for his first signing. The Washougal track is deceiving 1n regards to suspension setup. According to Yamaha suspension expert Cory Hut- ter, "The track always looks perfect, but teams end up struggling for traction." As a result, most teams were softening up the suspension for the race. When asked if he was racing this weekend, Washougal local legend Ryan Huffman stuck out his gut and said, "What do you think?" Huffman's since crossed over to the ranks of "moto dad," and he is introducing his 5-yearold son Brendan to motocross. Astonian Joss Laansoo was a no-show at Washougal. The Motosport Oudet/White Brothe~onda rider broke a bone in his ankle at the previous round in Colorado and will be out of action for at least four-to-six weeks.
