Phil Read took over the points lead in the 500cc World Road Racing Championship Series following his convincing win at the Belgium round of the series. After the race, Read had a 12-point lead... Bob Hannah won the Pro class at a local motocross at the famous Cansbad Raceway in Cansbad, California While he did not get the best of starts, in each moto, Hannah quickly moved into the lead and pulled away. 20 YE4RS A60... July 31, 1985 It was shootout season and we did our 1985 250cc twostroke shootout. All four bikes appeared on our cover. The big winner that year was the Yamaha... Matsu ..:J:=;..<;"",,,- Matsuzawa was the winner at the Vetter Economy Run at Laguna Seca Raceway. The event challenged contestants to see who could obtain the highest mileage over the course of the day. Matsuzawa won with a total mileage of 470 mpg on one tank of fuel. .. American speedway racer Shawn Moran won the 8radford, England, round of the World Speedway Championship. England's Kenny Carter finished second... Carey Hart won the Junior Cycle 9-1 I class at a Las Vegas Motocross Club race in Mount Carmel, Utah. Today, Hart is famous as the first rider to successfully complete a back flip on a dirt bike. 10 Y8\RS A60... July 26, 1995 Miguel Duhamel won his fourth straight AMA Superbike race during the seventh round of the series at Brainerd International Raceway. At the time, Duhamel was second in points - just eight points back from the leader Mike Hale... Jeremy McGrath also collected his fourth win of the year. He did so at the seventh round of the AMA 250cc National Motocross Series in Troy, Ohio. His teammate Steve Lamson swept both motos in the 125 class... Ryan Hughes won the annual Commotion by the Ocean at Carlsbad Raceway in Carlsbad, California. Tony Armaradio finished runner-up, with Doug Dubach completing the podium. Seals Communications Corporation (Sealsco) has announced an agreement to distribute its branded library and original content via a number of new cross~platform media, effective immediately. In doing so, the company will focus on its proprietary television and video content, programming library, and expanded forms of distribution including mobile, wireless, VOD over Ip, satellite and cable, according to the company. "We've enjoyed over two decades as a leading independent producer of network and sponsorsupported sports, lifestyle and entertainment content. Now, more than ever, there are tremendous distribution opportunities for our programming, and we're excited to be entering our 21 st year of business with plans to expand our presence in the marketplace," said Lou Seals, chairman and CEO of Sealsco. Sealsco has inked a deal with ConStrata LLC, an independent digital content agency specializing in the distribution, strategy and enabling of content for cross-platform deployment. Led by founder and president Larry Schwartz, ConStrata has partnered with Sealsco in this endeavor. "ConStrata is delighted to be working with Seals Communications Corporation, a company with a long and successful track record in its industry," Schwartz commented. "The potential of Sealsco's various programming assets is signiflcant," he added. California Speedway has announced that American Suzuki Motor Corporation has expanded its partnership to become the "Official Motorcycle and ATV of California Speedway" through 2007. Suzuki will be able to take advantage of having a major presence at the speedway's events, including in-market promotional support that will benefit race fans as well as a display at one of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race weekends. This follows the partnership agreement with Suzuki and California Speedway that made Suzuki the race weekend sponsor of this year's AMA Superlbike doubleheader, the Suzuki Superbike Challenge. Parts Canada has renewed its title sponsorship of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship for another three years, according to series promoters. The new arrangement takes effect with the 2006 season and will continue through 2008. The Calgary-based business, a wholesaler of aftermarket motorcycle parts with sales representatives across the country, is the sister company of U.S.-based Parts Unlimited. The sponsorship extension was announced at the recent Parts Canada Superlbike Championship doubleheader at Race City Motorsport Park. "We are owned by Parts Unlimited, and their motto is, 'We support the sport.' The people who come to these races are our customers. We want to support it on the backside," Parts Canada president James Danyluk said. Parts Canada became title sponsor of the Canadian national road racing series at the start of the 2000 season, making this the sixth year it has been affiliated with the Superlbike tour. The new deal will take the relationship to nine years and counting. Gary Bailey has announced his schedule of upcoming motocross schools. The schedule is as follows: September 2-3, Wortham, Texas (Freestone County Raceway): October 15-16, Peoria, Arizona (Canyon Off-Road Park); October 20-21, Huntsville, Alabama (Dunlop Proving Grounds); November 2S27, Axton, Virginia (Lake Sugar Tree Motorsport Park). Road America will be working with Doug Gonda of Protac to pursue additional twowheel racing venues for its yearly lineup of motor sports events, according to a release from the racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. A host for AMA events for 25 years and recent host of the season's first Supermoto event, Road America is looking to Protac to explore international cycle organizations. According to general manager and president George Bruggenthies, "We're happy to bring Protac on board to help us explore future motorcycle-related projects at Road America. Doug Gonda's proven experience in the field will be a great asset in our efforts to find premier events to bring to Road America. We have a number of exciting proposals already in the works and hope to expand Road America's involvement in two-wheel motors ports. Our area of the country has some of the most knowledgeable motorcycle racing fans in the country, and we feel they provide the base to expand our activities 1n the sport." The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (Cpsq, after recently meeting with the parents of children killed while riding full-size ATVs, has ordered a review of ATV safety rules, according to the AMA. Among other things, Commission Chairman Hal Stratton reportedly has asked the staff to look at whether people who buy ATVs should be required to take safety courses before getting the vehicle. Also, the staff will look at whether dealers should do more to explain to parents the number of children who get hurt riding ATVs. The CPSC is considering a petition by the Consumer Federation of America, 81uewater Network, and the Natural Trails and Waters Coalition to ban the sale of full-size ATVs for use by children under 16. ATVA director Doug Morris and AMNATVA legislative affairs specialist Royce Wood, representing ATV consumers, have repeatedly urged the commission to reject the petition. The CPSC staff has also urged that the petition be rejected because the panel can't regulate or enforce how consumers use products after purchase. The AMA, in cooperation with the National Off· Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCq and Washington off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, will conduct an AMA Ride Into Political Action Seminar and State Association Development Workshop for Evergreen State OHV enthusiasts on November 5-6. The purpose of the workshop and seminar is to provide the information and processes with which Washington OHV recreationists can most effectively influence legislation and management affecting their riding opportunities. The workshop will also provide the guidelines and a sixmonth plan for forming a Washington State OHV Association. Off-highway, trials and dual·sport motorcyclists, ATV riders, fourwheel drivers and snowmobile enthusiasts are invited to attend and help create a positive future for riding opportunities in Washington. The second annual Red Rock National DualSport Ride will take place October 8-9 in the famed Red Rock country surrounding Sedona, Arizona This year's event features a fully supported two-day loop from Sedona to the Historic Route 66 city of Williams and back. Day one takes riders through the Verde Valley, up the Mingus Mountains and atop the Colorado Plateau. Highlights include Indian ruins, the General Crook ATV Trail, the Town of Jerome, Perkinsville Road, the 8i11 Williams Lookout, Route 66 and the nightlife on Main Street in Williams. Day two takes riders through alpine forests and meadows along the rim of the Colorado Plateau to scenic viewpoints high above Sedona. Highlights include the Turkey Butte Lookout, rugged jeep roads, lunch in the cool pines of Munds Park and the panoramic Schnebly Hill Road. The event is open to all dual-purpose motorcycles, is sanctioned by the AMA and is designated as a National Dual-Sport Ride. Christian Klaus Neuhaser, the editor of Rood Runner Magazine, was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday, July 15 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Neuhaser's bike collided with a tractor-trailer, according to police reports. Police said his motorcycle went across both lanes of the highway, then collided with the truck and was pinned underneath it. The accident happened at about 4 p.m. Witnesses at the scene said Neuhaser was merging into traffic on Business 40 when the accident happened. They said three passers-by pulled him out from under the truck. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Friday night. CYCLE NEWS • JULY 27, 2005 13
