PHOTO BY TRISH HALE Rod Lake Racing AMA West Coast Amateur Nationals Round 3: Grays Harbor Raceway It was IIBanzai,1I Buckaroos! By JOHNNY GUITAR ELMA, WA, MAY 29 S eries championships were on the line as riders and their teams pulled into Grays Harbor Raceway for round three of the Rod Lake Racing AMA West Coast Nationals, presented by Hinshaw's Motorcycle Store. The Catywampus Caveman Motorcycle Club hosted the final round of the series on the lightning- fast half-mile track, Stevie "Banzai" Bonsey and Joe Hernandez had traded wins in the 450cc Modified class at the first two rounds of the series. They both knew that whoever won at round three would take home the championship. They also knew that Scott Baker was more than capable of upsetting their personal war. Hernandez shot off the line ahead of Bonsey and set a fast pace. As the laps wore down, Bonsey became more and more desperate, but he couldn't make a pass stick. Then, suddenly, Bonsey made a "banzai" attack in the last tum on the last lap to beat Hernandez by no more than six inches at the line! Hernandez was in disbelief as Bonsey scored the win in what was the best race of the day! In the SOcc Oil.lnjected class, Adam Hernandez had won the first two races of the series, and Alec Espos had had enough! Espos got the holeshot, ahead of Hernandez, and never looked back. Cody Annable rode solid to finish third. Brian Martinez Jr. had just gone three for three to sew up the 65cc DTX championship, but the going had been a little tougher in the 65cc Modified class, as Jake Burton had won the first two races, with Martinez placing second both times. After a seesaw battle between the two, Martinez put the hammer down to win, with Burton a close second. Taylor Masset finished third. Gary Hite won the Over 50 main with a dominating performance. Hite's trusty Harley-DaVidson XR7S0 made beautiful V-twin music all the way to the finish, with Ron Curtis taking second and Bud "Old But Bold" Roberts a solid third. Scott Baker was flying high with two wins under his belt, and he looked like a good bet to win again as he shot into the lead of the SOScc Modilied main, with Brady Mueller and Tyler Clark in hot pursuit. Just before halfway, Baker slipped high between turns three and four. When he recovered, he found himself third. behind Clark, while Mueller set sail out front, Baker salvaged second when he passed Clark on the white-flag lap, but Mueller was long gone, winning with room to spare. Allen "Geritol" Morinville figured that after placing third at the first race and second at the next one, this race should be his to win. Youngster Cody Shipley got off the line first, but Morinville - "The Veteran of Veterans" - took advantage of a mistake by Shipley and took the win. Shipley was second and Doc Ramos was third. By winning on this day, Derick Oquist made a clean sweep of the Pro Sport class. Three wins in three races meant complete domination by the Arlington speedster. Keith Anderson rode hard but had to settle for second, with Brandon Bergen a welldeserved third. eN GRAYS HARBOR RACEWAY ElMA, WASHINGTON RESULTS: MAy 29, 2005 (ROUND 31 50 OIL-INJ: I. Alec Espos; 2.
