Vet X Sinling Summer Series Round I: Cahuilla Creek MX Harada Hammers Out a Win By STEVE EMTER ANZA, CA, JUNE 26 ~ I Vet X race'" invaded Cahuilla Creek MX to kick off the four-race Sizzling Summer Series. The track workers had pre- pared a fun summer layout that was challenging but with slightly shorter lap times for the warmer weather. It was an uphill battle to keep the track prepped, what with the sun bearing down and a breeze doing its best to take the moisture out of the track. While the weather wasn't aaually "sizzling," the competition was. As this was the first round of the series, some riders were making their debut in new classes after moving up since the last series and trying to establish themselves in their respective classes. Gary Harada took the win in the 36-42 Novice class. It didn't come easily, as he was chased by Suzuki rider Ben West in moto one. At the start, KTM-mounted Martin Little charged into the lead and stayed there for the first two laps, with Harada right behind him. West started in sixth but began an impressrve charge. On lap three, Harada passed Little. Chuck Ferrari was chird, and West was now fourth. On the fifth lap, West put on his final charge, passing Ferrari and then Uttle to take second, where he finished, behind Harada. Little was third and Ferrari fourth. Harada and Little battled in the early laps of moto two. Harada led the opening laps, and Little was chasing him. On lap five, Little slipped by Harada and then held on for the moto win. Meanwhile, Chuck Ferrari put in a charge of his own: He was sixth off the start but slowly worked his way up to third in the closing laps. The overaJi win went to Harada (1-2), second went to Linle (3-1), and third went to Ferrari (4-3). Tony Sanfilippo came out on top of the 36-42 Beginner class with two moto wins. In moto one, he had to work his way up from third place on the first lap. Ahead of him were Honda riders Rick Ellis and Clarence Henderson. Sanfilippo battled with Henderson for two laps, staying within a second of him, and on the third lap he was able to get around him to take over second, behind Ellis. Gary Pash started in fifth but moved up to fourth. Ellis dropped out, giving the lead to Sanfilippo, with Henderson and Pash in tow, and that would be the finishing order for the moto. Sanfilippo charged into the lead in the second moto. Behind him, the riders were dicing for poSition, with Pash second, John Blanck third, and Sal Sandoval fourth. Sandoval was able to work his way up to second on lap two, and Pash dropped back to fifth on lap three. This opened the door for Blanck to move into third on the final lap. The top three in the moto were Sanfilippo, Sandoval and Blanck. The overall win went to Sanfilippo, and the runner-up was Sandoval (5-2). The consistent Dave Daniel (4-4) was third overall.
