That wasn't the only close race for Beaupre'. In Modern Support Expert action, he matched up against 37-year-old Yamaha rider Gilbert Valdez for twO rounds. But it was Valdez's Pre-1978 125cc Expert bout with Truchinski that was even closer, after Valdez yanked two great holeshots away from Truchinski for the sweep. The feature for the Vintage events was the team race, and it was a repeat from last year, with Swartz, Valdez and their teammate Darrick Contreras eking out a one-point victory. "Last year we called ourselves 'Team Dubach' because of our friendship with Doug," Swartz said after the win. "We've named ourselves 'Team Hadad' after Joe Melton, another friend." In that race, Beaupre was a strong contender before the Swartz-Valdez one-two finish, but he came up lame momentarily when he pulled to a halt midrace. "My front brake cable flopped over the front number plate, and it pulled the cable taut and put the brakes on," Beaupre explained. By the time he'd freed it up, the leaders were gone. Blushing a bit, he added, "It happened last year, and we thought we had it figured out. Obviously not. I think we'll have to go with about a dozen zip-ties to hold the number plate down." Sunday turned into heaven for two-stroke lovers, with the first-ever 250cc/500cc Pro feature, a pair of eight-Iappers (all the other races went four), and it qUickly developed into a duel between a veteran and a rookie, as former National competitor David Pingree went up against 17-year-old Adam Chatfield from England. The first race had 30-year-old ace Pingree taking the lead and pulling away, increasing his advantage to about six seconds by halfway. That changed abruptly, however, when Pingree's boot came unbuckled, and then his rear wheel began to wobble. "I thought I had a flat, but when I came in, I found a few spokes were ready to fall out," Pingree said. Chatfield closed to within four lengths at the checkered flag, but Pingree had the win. "Mota two is the money mota," the Brit said before their rematch. "My endurance is better, so if I get a good start, I can beat him." Pingree got the holeshot, but Chatfield passed him quickly, and the pair then exchanged the lead several times in the next five turns. When the youngster took the lead after their exchanges, he began to pull away to an eight-second advantage after three laps. Then Pingree came alive and came charging back, edging to within three lengths when the checkered flag flew. "It [his motor] was just bogging, like it was starved for fuel," Pingree said. "When it blew through the jet, it came to life - and almost a comeback. Too short of motos." Chatfield, who plans on attempting the final few outdoor events, confirmed Pingree's assertions. "He had it on me in that one," Chatfield said, "but 1rode just enough to hold him oft." For his efforts, he received the first prize of $SOO - and bragging rights at being the first Two-Stroke Pro Champion. eN (Above) Kevin O'Donnell was the king of the Pre-'75 Expert closs, claiming wins in the 125cc and 250cc divisions on Saturday (Above right) Roce promoter Rick Doughty (2) of Vintage Iron was also a competitor.
