"I finally got a good start" beamed Mica, Washington's Joe Kopp after completing one of the most financially rewarding evenings of his career at the 35th annual Old Time Newsies race for charity on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio. Kopp swept both the sOscc and 750/ I OOOcc main events at the nation's highest-paying ($30,000 in contingency alone) nonnational event of the year. Dominic Beaulac and George Roeder, the latter an I I-time winner of the Newsies, kept Kopp from a clean sweep by relegating him to a third-place finish in the 19th annual Edgar Fuhr Dash For Cash. Ron Kimmel upheld Ohio's honor with his first win in the Pro-Sport main after many tries on the tricky surface. The Edgar Fuhr Dash For Cash would be the first big money event of the evening. The standing-room-only crowd included over 1600 H.O.G. members attending the 2005 State Rally. The five combatants were the scratch-heat winners and the second-place finisher in the quickest heat. Beaulac, Roeder and Kopp had been here before. For Dan Gedeon and Hot Shoe points series leader in both divisions Jared Mees, it was their first dash. It was over after the first turn. Beaulac got the holeshot and led it the whole way, collecting the largest portion of the $2500 purse. Roeder, Kopp, Mees and Gedeon followed the Canadian to the checkers. "We have been on a roll," Beaulac said of performances lately. "I won Trois 44 Rivers, Troy and last night in London, Ontario" A quick turnaround was a necessity for the participants of the Dash, as they would all (minus Roeder) compete in the sOscc Expert main. Mees selected the inside pole while Beaulac took the outside. Kopp and Beaulac were side by side for the first tour of the fairgrounds. Kopp kept his wheels in line and drove away from Beaulac, who now had to deal with a hard- . charging Mees, who took the second spot from Beaulac and set out after Kopp. "I wish it had been a 20-lap main," Mees said later. "I would have been there." Instead, the laps ran down, with Kopp taking the win. "I was cautious," Kopp said, "and with two to go, I had to pick it back up." Kopp's tuner, Larry Zumbrun, was pleased as well "I just got the bike finished last night," Zumbrun said. "I made one pull on the dyno, and I knew Joe [Kopp] would be happy with it." Beaulac fought with his mount to stay in front of Chris Evans and Dan Gedeon. "I have a new bike, and I am still learning to ride it," Beaulac said. "We made some changes that didn't work out." Kevin Varnes finished seventh on the factory Suzuki, with Jimmy Wood, Ricky Marshall and J.R. Schnabel in tow. The sOscc Pro-Sport main would give I I of the same sOscc Expert finalists a chance to get some tearoffs and switch bikes for the 750/ I OOOcc main. Huntsville, Ohio's Kimmel led the field to the first JUNE 29, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS turn and to every turn after that for the win. Hot Shoe points leader in the ProSport division Chase Sconyers, Thomas Pulliam and Gary Conklin battled for the runner-up position for the first five laps. Conklin finally got by Sconyers in turn three and set after Kimmel, but Conklin ran out of laps as he closed on Kimmel. The Dash For Cash and the sOscc Expert finals were all just preliminaries for the 750/ I OOOcc main. The winner of the event would pocket close to $9000. Could the I I-time winner, Roeder, make it an even dozen? Could the winner start a streak like Gary Scott's seven wins or Steve Morehead's six wins? Kopp talked to Morehead before the main. "Steve told me that the one with the biggest cahones would win," he said. Mees took the inside pole, Roeder the outside. The definitive moment came in turns one and two. Kopp and Roeder tried to occupy the same space, and Roeder almost got off. But Beaulac's gearbox momentarily refused to shift on the start, and Mees took control of third place after one tour. Kopp ran away for the win. Roeder cir- culated alone in second, while Mees and Beaulac argued over third. Mees ended up having face-shield fogging problems, and he fell prey to Beaulac for fourth. ~ Marshall and Gedeon had mechanical problems and ended up ninth and 10th, respectively. Evans (winner in 2000) would lead Shawn Clark, Schnabel and _ Varnes to the checkers. Afterward, Roeder was still upset over the contact that he and Kopp had made. "Paybacks are hell," Roeder said.
