In the Enduro 2 class,
Australian UFO Corse Yamaha
rider Stefan Merriman amazed
everyone by not only starting the event just four weeks
after haVing his spleen removed but by topping the class
on both days, as well. HaVing only spent a few days riding a bike following a month of rest and recovery,
Merriman showed that had it not been for his roundthree incident, he certainly would have been the rider
to beat in the Enduro 2 Championship.
"Now that I have no real chance of winning the
Championship, there's no pressure on me," he said. "I
just tried to enjoy the race and do as well as I could on
the special test. I didn't have any problems with my
stomach because the tests were pretty smooth. I started to get a little tired towards the end of day one, but I
felt good on day two."
With Merriman back racing and winning, French
rider Fabien Planet pushed the Yamaha star the hardest
during the first day's competition, finishing just 17 seconds behind. In finishing as runner-up to Merriman,
Planet placed ahead of Finn Samuli Aro, who crashed
heavily on the motocross test early in the day. On day
two, Planet again claimed the runner-up spot, with Aro
matching his day-one result of third.
