AMA National Two-Day ISDE Reliability Qualifier a! KTM's Kurt Caselli runs away with Idaho City Two-Day win STORY AND PHOTOS BY DOUG KARCHER Briefly... This year, the ISOE will be held September 13-18 in the Republic of Slovakia. The next and only other qualifier will be held June 18-19 near Athens, Ohio. This year's event would not have been possible without the countless hours of work by club members and volunteers. The 3D-plus members of the Boise Ridge Riders start preparations for an event, almost as soon as the previous year's event is cleaned up, by identifying the trails, and obtaining permission and pennits for use of the land. Untold hours are spent clearing and marking trails, building or repairing bridges (approximately 18 of them), ribboning the grass track and setting the times. And that's all before race weekend, when volunteers swell the ranks to over 120 workers per day, helping with signup, tech inspection, sound check and impound, start, finish, special tests and checks, among other things. Once again, the event's scoring was han- dled by Event Scoring Systems (www.eventscoring.com). with the help of many volunteers, of course. Utilizing bar- code scanners at the checks and light-beam timing for special tests assured accurate scoring and greatly shortened the time it took to post results. The Boise Ridge Riders wish to thank John Roberts, of the Idaho State Land Endowment, who provided invaluable assistance to make this event possible, TM'S Kurt Caselli came to Idaho to win, and that is exactly what he did. And how! Caselli left no doubt in anyone's mind as to who was "the man" at this year's running of the Idaho City 100 Two-Day ISDE Qualifier, after laying down the qUickest times in every single special test over the course of the weekend. It was certainly an impressive performance by the rider, who was also the top American finisher at last year's ISDE in Poland. Later this year, Caselli hopes to see how he rates with the top European riders, as he has plans to compete in a round or two of the World Enduro Championship Series later in the year. It will also give him a good tuneup for this year's ISDE in Slovakia. This was Caselli's first victory at the Idaho event. Over 330 riders left the start line on Saturday. Rain showers the week before made for pleasant trail conditions for the first riders, though it did get a bit dusty as the day wore on. The course wound for more than 120 miles through the mountains northeast of Boise on trails with K 38 Saturday NB' I. Ronald D.y (Hon); 2. Bert BcodI"'d (KTM); J. When the scores were posted Saturday evening, Caselli was at the top of every special test, with a 16-second lead over Richard Dietrich. Brian Sperle was another 23 seconds back in third. Sunday dawned with stormy skies, and by the time the first of the 220 Sunday riders reached the grass track some 15 miles into the course, the rain had started to fall. It took a toll on goggles, but it also made for perfect trail conditions. Caselli went to work, again picking up another 16 seconds on Dietrich in the first test. Brian Brown, who DNFed Saturday due to a mysterious fuel problem, had found his groove and was making a run at the leader. But he was 14 seconds off in the second test and another five in the third. Caselli was tough, and by the end of JUNE 22, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS the day, he had topped every special test again and had nearly a minute on Brown's Sunday time. "It was a good weekend," Caselli said, '" just tried to stay consistent. The first day you want to push it but not too hard. The trail was tough and whooped out a bit today [Sunday]; I had to try and stay on top of everything." Powell bettered his Saturday finish of fifth to third on Sunday and third overall, while Dietrich slipped from second on Saturday to fourth on Sunday - but that was still good eN enough to give him second overall.
