AMA 2S0cc National Motocross Series Presented by FMF
MY OwN
RACE:
19 Doug Henry
250cc
5th (6-6)
'*-fs a fan-favorite at Southwick, Yamaha rider Doug
Henry was not too sure how he would do on the rough
course. "It definitely exceeded my expectations," Henry
said. "I was hoping for a top-10. I knew Ididn't have the
speed corning into the event, and that kind of worried me a
little bit. The last couple of times I came here, I had the
speed and then slowly just dropped back. This year, I knew I
didn't have the speed, so Iwas a little nervous. But still, not
having the speed but having the endurance was a big factor
here. The fom race, Ithink my lap times were pretty steady
the whole race. A couple good ones, but most of them
were pretty steady. Ithink a couple guys started off a little faster and just started dropping back.
It worked to my advantage, I guess. I ended up passing a couple of guys on the last lap in the
first moto. The second moto, it just seemed like I got a little bit of a better start and just kind of
hung out and didn't have any other problems."
24 Ernesto Fonseca
8th (7-1 I)
finishing seventh in the first moto, a fall in the second relegated
Team Honda's Emesto Fonseca back to 11th. "It was a tough race,"
Fonseca said. "I'm just glad Ididn't pull off, but I wish Icould have done a
little bit better. I had a crash in the first tum in the second moto, so that
made it tough from the beginning for a good overall. That's just how
racing is sometimes, and I'll try to corne back next week and do a little
bit better."

When the pack thundered through the
first turn of the second mota, Dowd
emerged with the holeshot, ahead of Reed
ai\d Windham, while Carmichael was buried
in the pack.
On the second lap, Reed moved into the
lead and attempted to run away again before
Carmichael could catch him - but nothing
doing.
Carmichael moved into second on the
third lap and within just a few laps was right
on Reed's rear wheel. The two battled briefly
before Carmichael made his move and
checked out.
"The second moto, when Ricky got by
me, I aetually got a bunch of sand in my
mouth," Reed said. "It just kind of jacked me
for a few laps, and he was gone. I just kind of
rode for second from there."
It was vintage Carmichael the rest of the
way: He got into the lead, pulled away and
promptly lapped into the top 10. By the finish, Carmichael had lapped up to seventh.
Meanwhile, behind Reed, Dowd quietly
circulated the course, just ahead of
Windham. At one point, Windham appeared
to be catching Dowd, but he eventually lost
touch with the veteran rider.
"The last few laps, I guess I was going so
slow out there; everyone could see me really good," Dowd said. "I was kind of keeping
an eye on Kevin. He kind of fell off there at
the end, so I kind of knew I had a little bit of
room to play. So I was just kind of cruising
around."
Reed finished 29.355 seconds behind
Carmichael, with Dowd finishing third and
Windham fourth. The overall was much the
same: Carmichael in first, Reed second,
Dowd third, Windham fourth and Yamahamounted Doug Henry fifth after consistent 66 moto finishes.
Carmichael leaves Southwick with a 29point lead over Reed.
"I go into the season wanting to put
myself in a spot to win the title," Carmichael
24
said. "I don't think about a streak like that. It's
awesome to see Chad do it [break the
streak]. If someone's going to beat it, I like to
see a guy who works hard do it."
