Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series Cross Country Motorsports Championship Round 13: Hazzard Hill PHOTO BY DEBBIE ALLEN Cregg Welcomes a Win, Gibson Clinches Championship! Bv DEBBIE ALLEN VANLEER, TN, APR. 24 id-$outh's last round rolled into paradise as the Cross Country Motorsports M Championship finished out its year. They saved Tennessee's hot spot in Vanleer for the grand finale, and there were 387 riders off of the start. Almost everyone enjoyed Hazzard Hill, because it is mostly tight woods and a picturesque setting. It was a beautiful day for a great race, and no one soaked up the pleasure of winning more than the Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series' top riders. Sarge's Cycles/KTM/Enduro Engineering/Pro Action of Kentucky/Maxxisbacked Dustin Gibson and Max Pitts/Ben's Performance Center/johnnie Signs/lidz by Fidsupported jeff Cregg were on cloud nine, because they both finally achieved their long- term goal: beating out Mid-South's four-time champion, P.A. Allen. Having raced all 13 events, Gibson ca"'!e out the overall champion. He made some impressive moves throughout the season and simply had a good time at Hazzard Hill. He jumped up the hill, entertaining a crowd of spectators on each of the four laps raced. It really didn't matter that he got 10th place overall because he earned something better: the championship. Congratulations were in order, since Gibson worked so hard at every race but this one. "I feel like I have a big weight lifted off of my back," Gibson said. "It feels great!" Cregg, on the other hand, wasted no time getting into the lead. Off the start, he got the holeshot and led for a mile but then fell, giving Mike Sampson, Alan Westerfield and Hayden Moore a chance out front. During the first lap, though, Cregg got tired of fourth place and ventured into the lead again. This time, he didn't give it up. He manhandled his Suzuki RM2S0 for the next four laps and finished in first place overall, which earned him an extra $400 for leading four laps, and also moved him up to second place overaU for the season. "I am so glad to finally get a win," smiled Cregg. "I beat P.A. Allen. I only wish that everybody could have been here, but I'll take the win." Meanwhile, former champion Mike Sampson and this year's Four-Stroke A champion, Nan Westerfield, charged back and forth. On the last lap, Westerfield put some lappers between them and finished in second place overall, while Sampson took third. "I'm getting too old for this!" declared Sampson. "I had a great line picked right at the end, but I was unable to use it. It was fun today, and I am worn out." Suzuki 250F rider Chaz Akers finished out his race as the winner of 300cc Four-Stroke B class. He won his class today and came out the champion. Cody Patterson followed in second place. eN HAZZARD HILL VANLEER, TENNESSEE RESULTS: APRIL 24, 2005 (ROUND 13 OF 13) OA: I. Jeff Cregg (Suz); 2. Alan Westerfield (Kaw); J. Mike Sampson (KTM); 4. PHOTO BY DEBBIE ALLEN Carter Carves Out a Championship By DEBBIE ALLEN VANLEER, TN, APR. 24 The final round of the Mid-South Hare Scrambles Vouth I Series brought closure to a very long season of 13 races. It had been a tough year for the Youth riders, but they faced each morning race head on and met every challenge that came their way. One would logically think that Hazzard Hill was going to be a downhill slide, since it was the grand finale, but rocks and roots and deep ruts made it quite the challenge. The biggest battle involved the junior B class. Riding his RM Suzuki, Tyler Carter carved out the Junior B Cross Country Motorsports championship. Zachary Nash, jeremiah Bowman, Tanner Byady and Richard Brewer finished out the top five for this season. "It wasn't easy," Carter said, "but I'd like to thank Hattiesburg Cycles for supporting me this year." Hazzard Hill was a dogfight to the finish between three riders - Byady, Carter and Nash. In the end, Byady came out the winner, though Carter came out the champion. Byarly has won more races this year, but he got a late start and didn't sign up for points quickly enough to claim the championship. Off the start, the battle began to unfold immediateiy, as 21 riders in the junior B class charged for the holeshot. Brewer got it, while several other riders slid out from behind him. Byady moyed from third place to first and then battled back and forth 50 JUNE 22, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS with Nash and Carter. Nash was fast; but unfortunately for him, he was on the wrong trail. He misread it while in the lead and got onto the adult track. This ultimately cost him the championship; by the time he figured out his dilemma, it was too late - he'was down a lap and unable to make up the difference. Nash simply had a bad day. Off the start, he was one of those riders who went down, taking the American flag down with him. Then he restarted dead last, got lost, and tore through the ribbons that blocked the adults' trail. Despite all this, he still came in third, Nash has been on the podium at every race this season, finishing in second place overall. Other riders who came out ahead at Hazzard Hill included jordan Ashburn, Adam Creasor and Dustin Milam, who filled the junior A podium, and Cody Shoettmer, Wesley Bolton and Brett lott topped the Mini podium. In the Pee Wee classes, Austin Smith, Cole Kirchoff and Dalton Riddle filled out the first three positions in the 7- to B-year-old age bracket, and Samuel Thurman, Hunter Gates and Ben jones were the fastest riders among the 4- to 6-year-old riders.. CN Zachary Nash had a horrible day at Hazzard Hill but still managed to finish third in the Junior B class in Vanleer, Tennessee, site of the final Mid-South Hare Scrambles Youth Series Cross Country Motorsports Championship round.
