Jimmy Jarrett wins a close one at the Moose Run STORY AND PHOTOS BY MIKE DEMAREE '- ~.:: ince 1994, race promoter Bill Gusse has been putting on an event that in some racers' minds is more of an obstacle course, or a test of survival, than it is a test of speed, Every year, the remarks, "I hate this place," or, "I can't stand to come here - I'll never come here again!" echo throughout the pits. But that is music to Gusse's ears. He feels that if he hears these words, then he has accomplished what he had set out to do. "I want a race that challenges these guys," Gusse said. "I want them to have to dig deep and have to leave everything that they have out on the course." Yet, the people that complain are the same ones that return year after year to the Moose Run. After all, they know that this is a race of guts and determination. It's not usually the fastest racer that wins, but it is the smartest. This was the I Ith running of the Moose Run. All the big players were on hand to see if they were up for the challenge - all except for Kawasaki's Chuck Woodford, who is still recovering from an injury. He has won the Moose Run many S times in the past. This year's racecourse consisted of two 40-mile loops that featured very tight tree sections, logs and places where you could hardly see the trail. There were deep river crossings and wide-open, sixth-gear grass tracks over flat and rolling terrain. Suzuki's Jimmy Jarrett and Fun Mart Cycles KTM's Shane Watts ended up in a race-long battle with Re ntoneo n lin e. com/N 0 real Motorsports' Brian Garrahan, on a Suzuki, with the battle being decided at the very last turn of the threeplus-hour race. Off the start, Yamaha-mounted Charlie Deutscher grabbed the holeshot and was leading at the end of the motocross track. However, his time up front was short lived, as Watts and Jarrett took control by the time they headed into the woods. Another Yamaha rider, Justin Williamson, also followed them closely.
