AHRMA/AMS Racing National Cross Country Series Round 2: Diamond Dan's Rlverport National Hosbach Tames the Texas Trail By B.M. DAVANPORT JEFfERSON, TX, APR. 1 I t was no April Fools joke that Mark Hosbach played on the competition at round two of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Asso- ciation!AMS Racing-sponsored National Cross Country Series. The FrankHn, Tennessee, resident and his trusty Husky appeared to like the Texas terrain, as he recovered from a slow start to collect top honors in the Post-Vintage Open Expert class. The course consisted of a 3-p1us-mile loop sprawting over a former lakebed and the levees that once surrounded the lake. Parts of the motocross track were also included, as were some multiple-line woods sections and a few muddy areas for added variety and to keep the riders on their toes. Lap times ranged from a bit over 10 minutes for the Experts to around 12 minutes for the fast Novice riders. Mark Thurman got his four-stroke Husky lit Rik Smits won the Post-Yi"tage 200cc Expert class on his KDX200 at round two of the AHRMAIAMS Racing National Cross Country Series, in JeHerson, Texas. and into the woods first to lead Jeremy BreWington, Scott Sears, Craig Hayes and Hosbach as the Post-Vintage Experts began their hour-long competition. Brewington worked his way around Thurman dUring the fim lap to take the lead. Sears dropped Thurman another positiol1 on the second lap, while a lurking Hosbach began to catch the top three riders. Hosbach finally reeled in the lead pack and managed to pass Thurman on lap three and then Sears on lap four, leaving only Brewington in front of him for the final circuits. The two riders Waged an epic battle as they changed positions, closing in on the finish. After the smoke and dust settled. it was Hosbach who prevailed by a bikelength at the checkered flag. Mall Knibb experienced a wild ride, barely controlling his Honda as he blasted his way into the woods, leading the Post-Vintage Open Intermediate class. Knibb settled down after his frightful start for a flag-to-flag victory over Joel Ester and the rest of the six-ride, class. Rik Smits cut some excellent lap on his little KDX200 to earn top honors In the PostVintage 200cc Expert class. Wes Poole was the fastest of the vintagebike racers to converge on the Texas terrain. The speedy Californian piloted his CZ to lap times barely over 10 minutes en route to his win in the Sportsman Open Expert class. The Sportsman Open Intermediate class was the largest and most competitive Vintage group. Four of the six racers completed six laps, with Can-Am pilot Jerry Grakauskas emerging with the class title. Mike Hance followeO in second, barely ahead of Kirl< Tolly in third and Charles Spann in fourth. AHRMA Speed & Sport/National Vintage Trials Series Round 3: Diamond Don's Riverport National Wipff Nearly Cleans Texas Trials By 8.M. DAVANPORT JEFFERSON, TX, APR. 1 T he American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association/Speed & Sport National Vintage Trials Series' riders visited Diamond Don's Riverport to test their skills on a challenging course that varied from conventional logs, rocks and ledges to unconventional stone formations that were originally the foundation of a sawmill. The 30 competitors found the terrain qUite challenging, and only two riders managed a clean loop during the event. Yamaha rider James Wipff managed a nearly perfect day, losing a total of three points with a 0-1-2 score to top the Modern Classic Intermediate class. George Kirby followed Wipff in the final results with a three-loop tally of 10 points. Kim McCandless dropped only four points on his Montesa, including a clean first loop, as he topped the largest class at the event. He was unable to duplicate his initial perfect round but dropped only one and three points during the next two loops, as he topped James Holton Jr.'s I I-point day in the Modern Classic Novice class. Sheldon Hefler is an accomplished trials competitor, but Vintage trials is a new challenge for him. Hefler obviously adapted to his Montesa quickly, as he topped the 52 JUNE 15,2005 • CYCLE NEWS Modern Classic Expert class by dropping only 18 points with a low loop total of two. Bob Ginder used his Yamaha to shadow Hefler dab for dab, but unfortunately he gave up 21 points riding the very challenging Expert line. Graham Foster held the low point total among all the Premier and Classic participants. He piloted his 1965 Triumph to a 24 score and the class title in the Premier Lightweight Expert class. eN DIAMOND DON'S RIYERPORT NATIONAL JEFFERSON, TEXAS RESULTS: APRIL 1, 2005 (ROUND 3) BEG: I.
