I azy River Motocross Ranch was the site for
L.combined rounds of the 17th annual Thor
United States Mega Series and the third annual
AMA Southern All-Stars MX Tour. The event
was also a qualifier for the NMA Ponca City
Nationals. More than 450 riders representing
12 states were on hand to enjoy the hospitality
of track owners Greg and Vickie Roberts.
Honda of Houston/Shift/Maxxis-backed Jase
Lewis wowed the crowd as he romped to wins
in the 12Scc B, 125cc Schoolboy and FourStroke
divisions.
Meanwhile,
Fence
Pros/Mota planet's Jon Boruff shook off all
challengers to win the 125cc and 250cc A
contests, as well as the Over 25 Expert class.
Lewis got slow starts in both Four-Stroke
motas but charged back each time and won
the day via his 2-1 score, in a points tie over
Andrew Gaddis. Ohio resident Patrick Nassie
was third.
In the 125cc B contest. Chris Todd had the
initial lead both times, but Lewis quickly moved
to the front and nailed down the moto wins.
Midstate Motorsports' Todd held on for the
silver, ahead of Tyler Horne.
Lewis went unchallenged in the Schoolboy
division and led both motos from start to finish.
Dalton Motorsports-backed Horne was the
runner-up, ahead of Mega Series points leader
Kyle Perry.
Boruff got a midpack start in the opening
250cc A moto. On lap three, he reeled in race
leader Clint Shealy and took over the lead,
eventually nerring a perfect score. GM5/DKRbacked Shealy finished at second spot both
times, ahead of Shane O'Banion.
In the first 125cc A mota. Boruff blasted to
a runaway win. Moto two was a completely
different story, as Boruff got a slow start, in
ninth position. Soon he moved up to begin a
three-way fight for the lead with fellow Suzuki
pilots O'Banion and Shealy. Boruff prevailed in
the final moments, posting another I-I score.
Shealy was again the runner-up, over O'Banion.
Racing against a full gate of competitors,
Alix Freeman posted a convincing win in the
opening 125cc C moto. In the second moto,
however, Freeman was sidelined by mechanical
problems. Yamaha of Doraville's Brian Berry
rode on to claim the overall win in a points tie.
His 5-1 score bested Keith Davidson's 4-2 tally.
Southern All-Stars series leader Levi Long was
held to fifth spot via his 2-10 score.
Matthew Hutchinson won the close-fought
SOcc Oil-Injected class after sharing moto
wins with runner-up Cameron Scism.
Hutchinson holds a narrow points lead over
Scism in both the Mega 5erie$ and the SAS
series points standings.
In the 50cc (7-8) division. Carter Oldknow
posted 2-1 finishes to earn the gold, ahead of
5AS points leader Donny Brown and Tayler
Davidson. Defending Mega Series champion
Paul Castano was fourth. Oldknow returned to
win the 65cc (7-9) contest.
Bluff City, Tennessee, resident and longtime
Mega Series competitor Chris Shortridge had a
good day. placing third overall in the Over 25
division. Tragedy struck just two days later
when Chris died in an automobile accident.
Godspeed. Chris.

Central U.S. Supermoto Championship Series
Round I: Briggs and Stratton Motorplex at Road America
Vestal, Carlson, Harlow
Gold at Supermoto Opener
By MARK

ELKHART LAKE, WI, APR. 23-24
A fter a morning spent shivering in cold
l""\Jeathers, the racing at the first round of
the Central U.S. 5upermoto Championship
Series got started with SuperBikers2 gridding
the Vet main on Saturday afternoon. (SuperBikers2 and Gateway Supermoto are teaming
to offer this traveling series, and will be running at both Road America and the Mid-State
Kart Track.) Terry Vestal took off with the
holeshot and left SCali Daubert, John Altman,
Wes Orloff and Mike Harlow Sr. balliing for
position. Altman stuffed his way inside and
took third, behind Daubert. Orloff and Harlow
were left fighting for fourth. The first five riders quickly separated themselves from the rest
of the pack. but as the laps clicked by. Vestal.
Daubert and Altman slowly put a few feet on
Orloff and Harlow every time they went
through the dirt section. Vestal held on to the
lead, while Daubert and Altman went after
second. When Altman finally worked his way
into second, Daubert was left with an easy
command of third. Vestal took advantage of
S6
lapped traffic and stayed in front of Altman,
while Harlow managed to steer his 21-inch
front wheel into fourth, ahead of Orloff.
Sunday found Harlow at the front of
another pack of bikes, but this time they all had
skinny front wheels. Even though he was in the
lead for the entire Sport class main, he felt the
most pressure from Ben Galka during the last
half of the race. It took Galka a few laps to get
around eventual third-place finisher Brian
Luxem, and by that time Harlow had built a fair
cushion and rode his Schaumburg Hondasponsored bike to the win.
Ben Carlson had a quick little get-off while
leading the Middleweight heat race and had to
start the main off of the front row. He did not
seem fazed in the least. and he drove right to
front of the pack, leading Scott Diedrich into
the dirt. Derrick Dippel and Kevin White found
themselves chained to each other for the first
couple of laps. White eventually got ahead of
Dippel, but he was unable to shake loose from
him for the rest of the race; the two finished
third and forth. With Carlson in the lead.
