Round 2: Willow Springs Horse Thief Mile
Rock-Solid Trachy

ROSAMOND, CA, APR. 17
ne hundred fifty-three entrants rolled into
the nine-turn Horse Thief Mile track at
Willow Springs Raceway for round two of the
STIARS Series. For those unfamiliar with this
track, it's cut into the side of a small mountain.
Elevation changes rob horsepower, which is a
must at this facility. Competition on this day
O
was fierce, as a large contingent of the heavy
hitters were on hand.
The 4S0cc main had GP Motor
Cycles/Husqvarna's Leonardo Bagnis sitting on
pole by virtue of the heat-race victory. Bagnis
took point as the pack of 10 roared into turn
one. In only his second ride since returning from
a serious injury, Zoo York/Alpinestars' Mike
Metzger ran second, with CHM Performance!
TLD's Gary Trachy third and Two
BrotherslShift's Steve Drew on the new Suzuki
RM-Z4S0 in fourth. The front three started to
separate themselves immediately (rom the field.
Just before the dirt section, Trachy made a move
and went from third to first; Metzger followed
him through as well and was now running
second. Bagnis found himself in third, followed
by Drew, Del Arno Mororsports' Cameron
Welsh, and Joker Machine's Justin Ross.
Crossing the stripe for the second time,
Metzger took over from Trachy and tried to set
sail. A half-lap later, Ross climbed to the fourth
spot. But Drew wasn't rinished, and he
regained fourth on lap six. But on lap seven of
10, Ross took it back for good. This lap also
saw Metzger tum the fastest lap of the day, at
one minute and 18:44 seconds.
However, by lap eight, Trachy, who was
(aster in the top section, had taken the lead
away for good. Metzger made one last·ditch
Micky Dymond (43) led eight laps of the 10·lap Open Expert main, but a
broken rear brake handed the win to Gary Trachy (357), who came
through the field from fourth at round two of Don Canet's SnARS Series.
effort on the last comer exiting the dirt for the
run to the checkered nag, hitting Trachy, but he
came up short. Bagois safely cruised to third,
and Ross finished fourth.
The Open Expert final was KTM/AJI Accessbacked Micky Dymond's to lose. Dymond,
who won the heat race going away, would lead
eight of the 10 laps, only to have a brake failure
and overshoot the berm exiting the dirt section
and ending up a disappointing fourth. Dunlop's
Trachy was in the right place at the right time
and inherited the win. Bagnis was a solid
second, with Chisum Racing/TLD's Josh
Chisum impressive in third. Chisum was a sight
to behold when exiting the dirt, jumping
crossed up back to the asphalt.
"I was having trouble with the brakes, front
and rear," Dymond later said. "Then the rear
went away totally. I tried to ease it into the
tum but couldn't make it. Then Metzger fell,
watching me. I'm disappointed."
"I was stuck in fourth," Trachy recounted,
"and I thought, 'I have to get by these guys.'
Micky was getting away, and I [thought] by the
time I got into second, I wasn't going to catch
Micky. But he went over the berm, and I took
it from there. I'm stoked to get the win, even if
it was handed to me. There are a lot of fast
guys out here today."

Dominate Northeast Classic

BINGHAMTON, NY, APR. 17
-r'he second round of the Thor/Parts UnHmitI ed Northeast Classic Series had the largest
turnout of riders so far in the fIVe-round series,
with just over 600 riders signed up to do bame
on the technical Broome-Tioga racecourse. Celebrating its 13th year, this series is the premier
motocross series of the Northeast. Rider
turnout was better than usual because at this
year's Broome-Tioga round, both the I25cc and
2S0cc Amateur and Pro Expert classes would
run the full National track layout that will be run
when Broome-Tioga hosts round 10 of the AMA
U.S. Motocross Championships in August.
Mitch Dougherty and Casey Clark
dominated the 125cc and 250cc Pro Expert
classes, respectively, in Binghamton, New York,
both with perfect I-I performances. Clark (3-2)
also finished runner-up to Dougherty in the
125cc class. Mike Dougherty (5-4) rounded out
the 12Scc Pro/Expert podium.
Mitch led the start of the first 125cc
Pro/Expert mota, with Bromley Suzuki's Barry
Carsten and Alex Sigismondi trailing. Sigismondi,
who moved up to the Expert class for 2005 after
a stellar Amateur career, was having little
problem being competitive in the premier
classes. After completing only half a lap, Mitch's
lead was five seconds. Mitch increased that lead
to seven seconds at the start of lap two. Carsten,

Sonny Nighman and veteran Kurt McMillen were
battling for second through fourth. Sigismondi
held fifth. Dougherty increased his advantage to
a whopping 14 seconds by lap three. Nighman
came off the National hill in second. McMillen,
Sigismondi and Mike Dougherty rounded out the
top five. Clark, who gated around 10th on the
start, was now up to fifth after McMillen
dropped from the top five on lap four.
Dougherty took the win with a ten second
advantage as Sigismondi and Clark closed down
Dougheny's huge lead in the final laps. Nighman
and Mike Dougherty rounded out the top fIVe.
Mitch again got the holeshot the start of the
final moto and led the pack out of the first tum,
with Sigismondi, Clark, Mike, and Carsten in
tow. Mitch still had the point when the leaders
came off the National hill on the first lap, but
this time out, Clark kept Mitch from pulling
away. Mitch had a four-second lead by the end
of the first lap, but Clark soon began to reel
him in. Clark reduced Mitch's lead to only three
bikelengths by lap three. Clark did all he could
to catch and pass the Kawasaki·mounted Mitch.
It came down to a drag race to the checkers on
the final lap, but it was Mitch who crossed the
finish line just ahead of Clark. Carsten, Mike
and Todd Wilcom rounded out the top five.
Clark leads the series points in the 12Scc
Pro/Expert class by nine over Dougherty after
two of five rounds. Clark and RRP's Damien
