DAVANPORT JEFFERSON, TX, APR. 2 ore than 250 competitors from throughout the United States ventured to north- M eastern Texas for round three of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association/AMS Racing-sponsored National Vintage Motocross Series. Washington State's Dallas Nyblod and South Carolina's Robby Neeley proved that fast guys come from both coasts, as each rider took top honors in two Expert classes. Nyblod blasted his 1974 Yamaha down the long start straight to lead the hotly contested Over 40 Expert class, with Joe Busby, Donnie Cantaloupi, Bob Speiss and Tom Benolkin in tow. Nyblod held the top spot for three laps before Cantaloupi worked his way past the leader. Benolkin was also progressing toward the leaders, working his way into third. The secondthrough fourth-placed riders were within Sight of Cantaloupi as he took the checkered flag. Nyblod finished a strong second, with Benolkin ctwging ahead of Speiss to finish third. Moto two began with Nyblod executing another perfect holeshot. His lead lasted less than a lap before Cantaloupi again blasted his Penton into the lead. Cantaloupi unfortunately suffered a problem that gave the lead back to Nybiod. The Washington resident motored on to take the moto win and the class title. Speiss used a consistent 4-2 tally to earn second-place honors. Problems for Cantaloupi and Benolkin in the second moto resulted in both former factory-sponsored Pros finishing off the podium. Nyblod was untouchable in the Sportsman 250cc Expert class, winning both motos, with Speiss in tow. jay Novero, joe Newmann and Scott Brophy rounded out the top five. The Over 50 Expert class was expected to be the day's main event, featuring such notables as "Bad Brad" Lackey, Jim Pomeroy. Neeley, ).0. Piper, Bob lucas and a plethora of very fast Vintage racers. When the gate dropped, former World Champion Lackey led Neeley, Lucas, Butch Cochran, Thomas Doherty, Robert Poole, Ron Winget, Don Gibbs and the rest of the field. Neeley swept to the outside of Lackey's CZ to take the lead on the second lap. The top two held their poSitions to the end, with Piper, Cochran and Poole rounding out the top five. Lackey pulled another holeshot. over Neeley and Cochran, to start mota two. Neeley pressured Lackey for more than a lap before Dallas Nyblad (2Y) won the Over 40 Expert and Sportsman 2SOcc Expert classes at round three of the AHRMA/AMS Racing/National Vintage Motocross Series, held at Diamond Dan's Riverport National. taking the lead, which he'd hold to the finish. Lackey held a steady second but never managed to pressure Neeley into making a mistake. Cochran maintained third, earning third overall. Neeley was the fastest rider in a strong field of Sportsman SOOcc Experts. He led both motos from start to finish to wrap up his perfect day. Scott Sears and jay Gref exchanged second- and third-place finishes, with Sears earning second overall via a runnerup finish in mota two. California Premier Expert riders Kelly Shane and Robert Poole battled throughout the day, exchanging moto wins, with Shane taking the overall via his mota-two victory. Jeremy Rewerts carded third overall by finishing third in both motos. Dempsey Elders' maiden rides in the Intermediate ranks proved frUitful, as he topped the Classic 12Scc Intermediates on his trusty CZ and the Classic 250cc Intermediates on a newly refurbished 1971 BSA B-2S. CN AHRMA Northwest Maieo & CZ/National Post-Vintage MX Series Round 3: Diamond Don's Riverport National Brewington Toasts the Competition in Texas By B.M. DAVANPORT JEFFERSON, TX, APR. 3 eremy BreWington was a shining star in Texas, as the Northwest Maico & CZ-sponso red American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Post-Vintage Motocross Series visited the Lone Star State for round three of the IS-race series. Brewington rode a herd of Suzukis to finish atop the Ultima 12Scc Expert, Ultima 250cc Expert and Open Age Expert podiums. He impressively won all six motos he entered and was definitely on his game throughout the day, as he was rarely chaJlenged and often held a lead of I5 or more seconds by the end of the mota. Tony Fox journeyed from Tacoma, Washington, to take class wins in the Over 40 Expert and Gran Prix 2S0cc Expert classes. The Honda pilot enjoyed a flag-to-flag victory in the opening Over 40 Expert mota, but mota two proved to be more challenging, as Bob Speiss nailed the start and managed to hold the lead for the first three laps, though Fox constantly challenged him for the top spot. Fox finally saw an opening and seized his opportunity to take the lead, dropping Speiss to the runner-up position. The mota ended with jeffrey Beerbower following in J 50 third and David Thompson in fourth. Speiss avenged the loss to Fox by capturing both moto wins over a large group of Historic Soocc Experts. Mike Owens managed to keep Speiss' Suzuki in sight as he earned secondplace honors for the day. The Over 50 Expert contest was exciting. Robby Neeley won the opening mota. However, his day unfortunately ended shortly afterward when he suffered a broken leg due to a collision with another rider. Dan Greenwood followed Neeley to finish second in the first mota. Ron Winget got a huge jump on the pack as mota two left the line. The Mako pilot maintained the top position for half a lap, until he had an off-track excursion that dashed his hopes for vict9ry. Greenwood assumed the lead after Winget's bobble and continued to expand the distance between himself and Wes Willis, who had moved into second place. Greenwood's 2-1 finishes earned him the class championship. BullaCO rider Gary Davis earned class titles in the Over 40 Novice and Classic 2S0cc Novice classes, with 1-2 scores in both divisions. Ted Lindewall was runner-up in the Over 40 Novice class. Davis edged Kenny Bond by one position in the Classic 2S0cc Novice c l a s s .
