The pristine grass track gave racers a reprieve from the muddy woods. cruising. My goal was to just finish today and try to not crash. Things were going along really good the first couple laps, then Jason [Raines] came past, and he was going fast. I was just happy to run my own pace and see how it all finishes out at the end." Yamaha-mounted Raines was near the front and within eyesight of Watts on the first two laps. "My Yamaha got a great start today," Raines said. "That front tire I put on, a Bridgestone, was unbelievable out there. I followed Shane [Watts]. He's really good in the grass tracks, so I followed him for about two laps." Never running out of the top three was NorCal Motorsports/Rentoneonline.com's Suzuki-mounted Brian Garrahan. "I got a pretty good jump out of the gate," Brian said. "Us three [Raines and Watts included] and my brother [Patrick] were just kind of cruising on the first lap because it was so muddy, and we didn't really know where the course was going. Then, after the first lap, we all picked it up and started going pretty good. I tried to get out front after Jason [Raines] pitted, but they [Raines and Watts] were just going faster than I was." During the third lap, Raines started to put on a charge. '1\fter stopping for goggles, Igot around Brian and Shane within a couple miles," Raines said. "I still didn't feel like I was riding that fast - just cruising and trying not to make mistakes. I didn't get stuck all day." With Raines starting to pull away during the middle part of the race, the real race now was for second between Brian Garrahan and Watts. Although Watts admitted to some mistakes, he still held on to finish ahead of Garrahan. "The middle part of the race I had a few crashes, and the last lap I was in front of Brian," Watts said. "I kept missing lines. He was definitely the better rider in the last mile or two, but the main thing, I made it to the finish just in front of him." Garrahan acknowledged Watt's sentiments but knew that his efforts came up just short. "I caught up to Shane at the very end and had a good little battle," Garrahan said, "but eN unfortunately I couldn't get by him." Brief'Y··· Extreme weather conditions, including thunder and lightning, made the Funky Chicken course quite a challenge. Travis Bamford and his sweep crew were utterly exhausted after pulling bike after bike out of the tight wooded sections during Saturday's Amateur action. Trail bosses Walter Schwarz and Damon Pocoholec worked nonstop to totally overhaul a course that received major damage. Their relentless effort provided a challenging course that was well received by all racers. The race was once again held at the Big K Ranch, just outside of Elkton, Oregon. AI and Kathy Kesterson continue to allow the Emerald Trail Riders Association to use this gorgeous 2S00-plus-acre ranch. In addition to the race, weddings, family reunions and company retreats are also held at the Big K, as they have 20 cabins and a full-service lodge. Other activities available include skeet shooting, gUided fishing trips and horseback opportunities. KTM Country of Eugene provided Shane Watts with a stock KTM 200 to ride at this year's event. Not only is owner Bart Uding a generous financial supporter of both the Funky Chicken and local off-road motorcycle racing, this year he went the extra mile and was a member of the heavily punished ETRA sweep crew. Already a very scenic and spectator-friendly course, ETRA added some spectator flare by placing two Oregon log sections near the finish. Riders could opt to take a much longer route around if they 50 desired. Pereira (KTM); 3. Stuart Mulanix (Hon). 200 A: I. Erek Arnold (Yam); 2. Nolan Irwin (KTM); J. Dan Melvin (TM). 30 A: I.
