winning the race against his championship hopes. With Yamaha's Jamie Hacking sidelined by a bicycle injury, the points lead was up for grabs. Yates came into the race tied with Yamaha's Jason DiSalvo for second, behind Hacking. '1\11 these corners have patches where there's little dips right when you're letting off the brake and you're tipping it in, and the front gets a little unstable," Yates said. '" surely didn't want to go down anywhere." With four rounds to go, Yates leads DiSalvo by six points, 190-184. Kawasaki's Tommy Hayden, fifth today, is third at 168. Despite losing the lead on the last lap, May was ecstatic about his first AMA podium. "It's great," he said as he celebrated his 25th birthday. "I could never imagine what it would be like. It's a lot different winning F-USA club racing. This is the show. Guys like Aaron [Yates] have been racing forever. '" remember watching him when I was in high school," he said as the pressroom erupted in laughter. "I started late. My first road race was in '99, that's why I run 99. I'm a late bloomer." Not in this race. He'd brought in his personal suspension specialist, at his own expense, to sort out the handling, and it seemed to work. '1\pparentiy, I have kind of a goofy setup, so once we went back to my goofy setup, I started flying again," he said. Still, May couldn't stop his rear tire from going off late in the race, something Yates expected. "In practice , was around him a few times, and it looked like once their tires started going off a little, it wasn't such a little, it was a bit," the Dunlop-using Yates said of May's and Barnes' Pirellis. 'i\nd they kind of slow up a little. I was hoping 32 it would happen in the race, and it looks like that's what happened." May couldn't stop Yates from making the pass on the final lap, but he never gave up. "Made up some time in Canada Corner, made up some time in the back section. There wasn't enough real estate left to get the draft," he said. Graves Motorsports Yamaha's DiSalvo spent the race chasing the quicker Suzukis at the head of a changing group of riders. At the end, it was DiSalvo and the Kawasakis of Roger Lee and Tommy Hayden. "Could have had something for Aaron [Yates], but then again, Geoff May was up there and his bike was qUick, too," DiSalvo said. "I'm not going to say it was a disappointing weekend, but I'm not jumping up and down." ROAD AMERICA ELKHART lAKE, WISCONSIN RESULTS: JUNE 5, 2005 (ROUND 6) REPSOL LUBRICANTS SUPERSTOCK.: I.
