Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series
Round 7: Woodland Motocross Park
Brockway Blazes Away!
By CLAY LIGHT
WOODLAND, WA, APR. 3
Y
amaha-mounted Oregonian Joe Brockway
blazed his way to the top of the ranks in
two Evolution classes at the penultimate round
of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution
Motocross Series, held at Woodland Motocross
Park. Despite tough competition, Brockway
forged to the head of the fields in the Open
and Under 40 Expert classes and won three of
his (our motos to join an elite circle of double-
class winners.
Several class titles were decided on this day.
while others will go down to the wire at the
series' finale. Veteran Vintage racers Glenn
Rose and Steve Jurchin didn't have the best of
days while competing in the 12Scc Evolution
Intermediate class, placing fourth and fifth
overall, but the two did stay close in their
points battlel and are only two points apart and
headed for a decisive battle in a few weeks.
Todd Knopper and Coli Donaghue placed first
and second overall, respectively, followed by
Charlie Martin.
CZ rider Chris Clark was also a doubleclass winner and posted the Open and Over 30
Expert-class wins during the Vintage portion of
the program, which drew riders from three
states and Canada. Those riders were blessed
with superb track conditions; those that stayed
home in fear of muddy conditions realty missed
out, as it couldn't have been much better than
this. Clark found the track to his liking and
finished at the head of the classes in all but one
moto. He and Honda-mounted Andrew
Sullivan (riding in separate classes) bumped in
the second combined Over 3D/Four-Stroke
Expert moto, and Clark got the worse of it,
although both riders scored overnJl wins.
Clark was also the top performer in the
combined Open Intermediate/Expert contest,
beating Husqvarna rider Dirk Murphy in both
motos to snare his second of two overall wins.
Husqvarna-mounted Bill Grubin rounded out
the top three finishers in the Expert class,
while the battle for the Intermediate-class wins
wasn't settled as easily. Bultaco jockey Travis
Anderberg and CZ pilot Brett Giboney clashed
during both motos, but the score was settled in
Anderberg's favor after he beat Giboney to the
finish in mota two.
The 250cc Evolution ranks have been large
in rider numbers throughout the season, and
this day was more of the same. Yamahamounted Jay Nelson had a good day after
snagging dual mota wins in the Amateur class.
John Telford, a consistent front-runner
throughout the series, which started off at
Ward Creek, Washington, again played the
consistency card and, by virtue of ~-2 finishes,
clinched the class tide. Matt Sullivan topped the
Intermediate class with 1-3 finishes, his best
performance coming in the first mota, in which
he beat Husqvarna rider Rick Ferris. Maicomounted John Daniels won the second mota,
but inconsistency on his part (a Sixth-place
finish) dropped him to third overall, behind
Sullivan and Ferris.
