Briefly... Continued from page 7 After two hours of close racing, Montclair Yamaha's Ty Davis took the win at round six of the World OffRoad Championship Series at Honolulu Hills Raceway in Taft, California, on May 22. For Davis, it was his first win of the season, and he worked hard for it. With the win, Davis also ended the two-race win streak of teammate Nathan Woods. With high temperatures and dusty conditions, the Pro race got under way and defending Champion Woods took the lead, followed by Team KTM's Kurt Caselli and Davis. After the first lap, Caselli began pressuring Woods for the lead, while Davis sat patiently in third. The next lap, everything changed. When the pack thundered through the pits for the completion of lap three, Caselli pulled in with bike problems, setting the stage for a Davis/Woods duel to the finish. With Caselli out of contention, Team FMF/Suzuki's Mike Kiedrowski took over second but later relinquished it to Team Kawasaki's Destry Abbott when he ran out of gas. Abbott then got a nat tire and gave the position up. Meanwhile, Woods and Davis battled out on the rough course. With Davis leading, the two were just bikelengths apart with only 30 minutes remaining in the race. Finally, with two laps to go, Davis wore Woods out and opened up to a comfortable lead. Caselli continued after his crew worked out the problem, but he was way back. Going into the race, Caselli sat in second in the series points standings. Needless to say, the mechanical problems were a disappointment for the young racer. When the checkered nag new, Davis crossed the line ahead of Woods and Kawasaki-mounted Lance Smail, who had worked his way up from a horrible start and had a relatively trouble free day - with his consistency paying off. Honda rider Matt Karlson finished fourth, while David Pearson held on for fifth. Brendan Lutes was blown away by the fact that they had a full pit and garages with at least 40 bikes out on the track!" Over the flVe-day event, more than 200 riders, consisting of both street and race, logged over 40,000 thousand miles, Stan Foxworthy, marketing director of Racing 2 Save Lives, said: "We had a fantastic showing, and the community was qUite generous in helping us along with our goals, but what really made the event such a huge success was partnering up with Pikes Peak International Raceway. Rob Johnson, president of PPIR, has an amazing team here. Arlene, Skinny, Tony and the rest of the staff really pulled out the stops for us. We couldn't have done it with out them! We've already begun planning for next year's event. This year's event proved to be so popUlar, we are looking to add two more days for street rider participation, and we've already got some great surprises in store for 2006!" Lafferty carded a 21 while Hatch finished with a 24. Third-place finisher, Honda-mounted Matt Stavish scored a 25. "My shoulder actually felt pretty good all day considering the doctor just gave me the okay to ride again four days ago," Lafferty said. "Since my surgery [3 1/2 weeks ago), where they pinned and plated my collarbone, I've only been able to do some limited physical therapy to keep my upper body in shape. "I didn't come here to win, just to ease back into the series," Lafferty said. ''All day, AI [Randt, Lafferty's mechanic] and Melissa [Randt's wife) told me to just keep riding.
