Happenings in Motorcycling 5tate Motocro!i!i Week On April 9, at the state-owned Jordan River Off-Highway complex, Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. declared a State Motocross Week across the state of Utah. The official declaration reads: "Whereas, motocross riding as a form of healthy and responsible outdoor family recreation continues to grow in Utah; whereas, many citizens of Utah will enjoy the sport of motocross riding in Utah dUring 2005; whereas, Utah provides outstanding opportunities and facilities for the enjoyment of motocross riding; whereas, the motocross industry contributes thousands of dollars annually to Utah's economy; and whereas, motocross safety education programs have resulted in decreased accidents and injuries to riders of all ages; now, therefore, I, Jon M. Huntsman Jr., governor of the state of Utah, do hereby declare April 9 as the kickoff to the 2005 Motocross Season." One of those in attendance was Frank White, CEO of ATK Motorcycles (America's only off-road motorcycle manufacturer located in Utah). "The governor and I have ridden together and had a great time," White said. ':As a kid, the governor rode Maico's like me, so he can't be that bad. The governor clearly has a vision for motorcycle racing, the benefits it can bring to the economy and also what a good family sport it can be if it's done in a responsible way. He indicated Utah was the great place for motorcycling, and I agreed and said that's why we moved ATK to Utah 12 years ago." White also indicated how impressed he was with the governor's riding skills. White commented on how good it is to have someone in a high political position who understands and has a long-term vision on where the motorized recreational business is, where it's headed and also someone who understands the enjoyment such experiences have brought to him, his family and the millions of people who recreate each weekend in the country. "The motorsports community needs this guy as the next President," White added while laughing. Rubba Gets aHummer In an impromptu media event in the Hard Rock Hotel parking lot in Las Vegas, Nevada, Fox Racing, one of the most recognized and best-selling motocross apparel brands in the industry, presented James "Bubba" Stewart with his official Fox Racing SMA (Stinger-Mac Accessories) H2. Uniquely designed for the champion, this Hummer H2 was covered in "Rolls Royce Phantom Blue" paint and furnished with many of SMA's manufactured products, including its complete titanium billet kit. SMA Customs also installed tires from BF Goodrich mounted on 24-inch TIS wheels, a Magnuson supercharger, SMA exhaust by B&B, suspension from Ground Force, KC HiLiTES, and a stereo system from Rockford Fosgate that will make the whoops at an AMA Supercross seem tame. Fox Racing and SMA teamed up to produce a limited number of these stylish yet aggressive Hummer H2s. Here, Stanton is pictured at the '89 Seattle Supercross, where he finished fourth twice in the weekend's double-header. His teammate, Rick Johnson, was in the middle of a five-race winning streak, but Stanton went on to win the title after Johnson injured his wrist at the opening round of the AMA National Motocross Series at Gatorback in Gainesville, Florida. At the time, the Nationals started in the middle of the Supercross season. 96 MAY 25,2005 • CYCLE NEWS
