Cory West (5uz); My Own Race 17 Miguel Duhamel 25th,6th American Honda's Miguel Duhamel and jake Zemke both pitted to change rear tires on Saturday. Though both used the same Dunlop 3133 soft rear used by most of the field, induding race winner Mat Mladin, the Hondas and the Ducati Austin of Eric Bostrom suffered severe abrasion. Duhamel was in a pack fighting over fourth before he began to tail off around lap eight. By the time he pitted on lap 17 of 28, he'd dropped to 19th place. "When it went away, it went away big," he said. "It was like a rain tire when the track gets dry. I couldn't make up my mind if I had to stay out there and get more points like that or come in and change tires. So it was really unfortunate, but it tums out it was the right race tire. It was just... for whatever reason, it was completely shagged. It's too bad, because we were having a good race there." On Sunday, Duhamel went faster, but so did everyone else. "We were a lot faster there," he began. "Unfortunately, we had a little bit of a hiccup with the fuel injection there, and it was causing quite a bit of chatter. I didn't have any jd~ when Itumed the throttle off, which is what it felt like, and the wheel was hopping off the ground; that's why Iwent wide in the carousel there. For the rest of the race, I was trying to deal with giving it throttle and braking and all thaL stuff." 98 jake Zemke 20th, 4th "Same thing," Zemke said after listening to Miguel Duhamel's tail of woe. "For some reason, we were pretty hard on the tire. From about the fifth lap on, I could feel the thing gOing. I'm going, 'Well, hopefully it won't get any worse.' Iwent from doing 38s to... I think Iwas doing 44s when I finally pulled in [on the 20th lap], and just losing the rear everywhere - just comer entry, midcomer, everywhere. TIle thing was just coming around. It was like riding on ice. They put another tire on and that seemed okay." Sun- day went much better for Zemke. He passed Neil Hodgson on the 14th of 2B laps, and the pair went after the leading trio of Suzukis. '~one point ,we were down to wtthin a second of those guys. or somewhere, I-point-something, 1.5 or something, but then when we got into the Iappers, it was allover, and [we] lost touch with those guys for second and third." Zemke said the race proved that the team was making progress, and the increased race pace was proof. "For the first time, we're aetualty starting to see some results from the progress here and going quicker than we did on last year's stuff, so that's a good sign," he said. 11 Ben Spies 4th,3rd Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies tried a different tire than most everyone else, and it didn't work on Saturday. While the podium trio went with a soft rear, Spies chose a hard one and found after the red flag 22 AMA Superbike Series MAY 25, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS 16. Jimmy Moore (502); 17. Jeffrey Tigert (5uz); 18. Rapp didn't start Sunday's Superoike race. A light rain at the start of the Superstock race forced it to be moved to the end of the day. Otherwise. it might have run into the live Superbike television broadcast. "I didn't even go out," Rapp said. "My focus is Superstock, and I thought I had a It spun. It didn't tum. We don't know what it was. Nothing bad against Dunlop, but hopefully we just got something bad - a bad tire or something - and it'll be fixed tomorrow. It was definitely a long race, and my tailbone reaily staned hurting me around lap IS." Spies said about the third lap he considered coming in for a tire change, but didn't. "just couldn't get it done and just couldn't reaily even ride the bike," he said. "I just had to sit back. Igot reaily mad.
