On the starting line, Over 38 Novice rider Jim Wentz keeps his kids close to his heart • literally· at the Over The Hill Gang motocross event at Perris Raceway. TJ. King rekindled his fire with OTHG, as he came out with the holes hot in both Over 38 Intermediate motos. Arnie Davis tried for another signature holeshot but was pushed out and settled into second in the second mota. This time, Pat Samudio and Craig McCarley stayed just ahead of RiZZO, neither wanting to let Rizzo get around and both trying to keep cool heads and to catch Davis and King. The five had a fun and close battle, along with Rob Moore. Samudio led the charge through the frontrunners, followed closely by McCarley. Rizzo had a hard time passing King; well into the fifth lap, when catch-up time was running low, Rizzo put on a charge. McCarley's poor first-mota finish left him out of any shot at podium spots, but still Rizzo charged. A guest rider hampered Rizzo on the last lap. McCarley held on to second. The deCiding factor in this race was that Samudio's workouts gave him the most stamina and strength. and he took the overall. "Well, I'm the race director," Samudio said. "I rode my bun off out there. If the club's going to bump me to the next-highest class. then so be it. I'm going to set an example. I try to ride my hardest at all times. Everything just came together today." In the Over 30 Beginner class, Micah Clark followed Ryan Rannow until the downhill triple and then made the pass. Justin McGinnis pulled the holeshot but was edged out of the last podium spot by Rick Haines. Clark put together two fine races for a I-I tally, taking the overall win in stride. Darrin Snoddy keeps plugging away in the Over 38 Beginner class, and now he seems to be positioning himself as a top contender. Snoddy walked away with two mota wins, despite pressure by Herb Lloyd and Steve Mizrahi. "I stalled while leading it coming into the fourth turn going too slow," Mizrahi said after the mota; a nearby fan overheard that statement and chuckled. Eric Warrington landed feet-first on the top podium Spot in the Over 30 Intermediate class. That class is like a poker game: One week you're up; another, you're down. It seems to depend on how much good, productive practice one has put in at the track before the race, as one rider commented. Joe Acuna led the second mota, but a textbook block-pass by Warrington right in front of the fans gave them something to study. Curt Bennett took the final podium spot. RESULTS KIDS SUP: I.
