Honda-Yamaha of Redlands Six-Hour Endurance Series Round I: Glen Helen Raceway PHOTO BY JOHN BETHEA Staying Power By JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAR. 13 obody goes through a six-hour endurance race unscathed, N not even the winners. And this year's edition of the first round of the annual HYR Endurance Series at Glen Helen Raceway was tougher than most. "Very rough," said winning team member Mark Tilley at the end. Tilley's adventure started early - on the first lap, in fact, when he led the field to the top of Moum St. Helens, where he faced a dilemma. "It was chaos," he recounted. "There were banners everywhere. and the gate was open, and I didn't know which way to go. I, [Mike] Metzger, and a couple of other riders just went straight." They cut off a fair-sized chunk of the initial tOUf, and when they finished the first lap, the front four were close, well over a minute ahead of everyone else. Tilley led by less than a second over Todd Gosselaar, with Jeff Willoh just a few seconds back, fending off Metzger for third. Gosselaar was the first to go. "I just hit a wall and fell"back to fourth," Gosselaar said, "but then, later on the same lap, coming down the hill, going about 40 or 50, I hit a breaking bump and endoed ali the way to the bottom." Gosselaar got a rider to the pits. Almost simultaneously, Tilley went sprawling. "I came up to it [the missed section] again," Tilley said, "and there was a guy there, waving 'No, you can't go that way!' and the gate was closed. I launched directly into his quad." Metzger took over the lead, with Willoh second, but soon Tilley was forcing his way back, along with his teammates Mike Childress and Eric McKenna. Just near the end of Derek Mahoney's stint on the leading CRF450, at about the two·hour mark, he hit a sharp rock in the riverbed. He didn't fall, but the rear rim received blunt-force trauma and, "confused about the rules on how to pit to repair a flat," he lost the lead getting back. Sunset MX Park Martinez Gets It Done By GARY T. OBER RIO HONDA, TX, MAR. 13 uzuki-mounted David Martinez took the top spot in the 250cc Beginner class on a 2-1 score after mixing it up with fellow RM rider Angel Palacios at Sunset MX Park. When the gate dropped for the first moto, Pala~ios went right to work, claiming the holeshot ahead of Rey Sanchez, Carlos Gallardo, Martinez, Rick Maldonado, Bobby Garcia, and the rest of the I O-rider field. Palacios won the mota, and Martinez took second after passing the Valley Mulisha's Sanchez on lap two. Sanchez held on to third. followed by Gallardo, Garcia, Chris Carroll and David Pezeshki. In moto two, Honda-mounted Garcia pulled the holeshot and led for four laps. Martinez made his move on the final lap, taking the mota win and, with it, the overall. Palacios also got around Garcia, sending him back to third. where he finished the moto. Sanchez and Gallardo rounded out the top five. The facility has added a new section to the track, dubbed "The Pit", a 34-foot double into a big bowl right turn that leads to a 36·foot S 56 McKenna took over at the front, but his team had no idea who was in second. They didn't need to know, as they held a huge advantage to the end, riding their Temecula Motorsports/Precision Concepts/Dunlop/Dr. D/XR Only Honda CRF450 without further incident. It was a different story for I25cc/250cc Expert winners Ty Renshaw, B.J. Daugherty & Broc Daugherty. Holding a comfortable lead midway into the race, the sprocket bolts on their Suzuki came loose, jamming against the swingarm. Renshaw had to push the bike all they way back to impound to change to their backup Yamaha - which refused to fire for a while. After handing the bike over, Renshaw finally collapsed in exhaustion. A lap later, their team was back in the pits to repair the Suzuki's wheel. Then they sped away - only to return with a flat. Four times they traded rides back and forth, while the eventual runner-up team of Perrin Perez & Randy Kinkelaar took over the lead briefly, only to lose it again when they got a flat. Near the end, still within a few minutes of the lead, Perez sighed, "We're down to just our backup bike - and it's sounding sour, too." eN GLEN HELEN RACEWAY PARK SAN BERNARDINO, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: MARCH 13, 2005 (ROUND double/step-up and then back out onto the track. The Pit saw a few crashes but was still a favorite with racers and spectators alike. The event was sponsored by RSC/San Benito, eM Graphics & Signs, Radio Shack of Port Isabel, Carroll Construction Company, Native Punk Southwestern Art, Motocross Race Productions, Sound Advice, and the Grove Supercross Track. Although only four girls were in the Women's Open class, theirs turned out to be one of the best races of the day. Yamahamounted Delanie Montgomery took the firstmota win after taking some heat from Chelsey Gutierrez. who finished second. Daniela Perez had some bad luck and stalled her Kawasaki on the first lap, allowing the two front-runners plenty of space. Perez did manage to pass Daryl Livingston, giving her third in the mota. The second moto saw Perez nab the holeshot and lead the race for one lap, with Montgomery in tow, until Gutierrez reeled them both in for the pass on lap two. Gutierrez went on to win the moto, followed by Perez, Montgomery and Livingston. Montgomery, Perez and Gutierrez also contested the 125cc Beginner class. Gutierrez took third in the first moto. Unfortunately, a DNF in mota two nixed her chances in the nine·rider field. Montgomery hammered out a sixth-place finish on a 5-7 score.
