- Round 4 AMA SUPERSTOCK in third, followed by Holden, Rapp, Kawasaki's Roger Lee Hayden, John Haner and Aaron Gobert, on another factory Yamaha. DiSalvo and Yates were in a battle of their own on the fourth lap with a small gap over Hacking in third 1.2-seconds back. However, Hacking was the rider on the move. As they approached the chicane on the fifth lap, Hacking got by Yates and set his Sights on DiSalvo. Holden was hanging on to fourth position, just ahead of Rapp and Roger Lee Hayden. Hacking was all over DiSalvo on lap seven and passed him in tum seven. But just as Hacking looked like he would take control of the race, his tires started to give him problems, and he almost highsided his R1 in tum 1I, handing the lead back to DiSalvo and letting Yates get back by as well. "I had to run these guys [DiSalvo and Yates] down," Hacking said. '" ran them down, and everything was good and working really well. I got by them both on the brakes and then just started to run my own race. Then a couple of laps after that, my tire just went south on the thing. I mean, it just had no side grip at all. It tried to throw me off a couple of times on one lap, and I just managed to hang on to it and finish the rest of the race." At this point Rapp had moved around Holden and tried to pull away from the battle between Holden, Roger Lee Hayden, Gobert, Tommy Hayden and Haner. With five to go, the battle at the front was a three-rider affair, with Rapp in a solid fourth with a comfortable gap to the chasing pack. On the 12th lap, Tommy Hayden was by his brother to lead the four-rider pack of Roger Lee Hayden, Gobert and Holden. The next group of rider.s included Haner, Buckmaster and M4 EMGO Suzuki's Geoff May. Yates got by DiSalvo in turn four as the front-runner.s got into heavy traffic on lap 13. Yates was able to stay in front and crossed the start/finish stripe for the fiest May 14, 2005 Repsol Lubricants Superstock Series time in the lead. Hacking was visually struggling with grip from his rear Dunlop and looked to be falling a bit behind Yates and DiSalvo. As they approached the chicane, DiSalvo tried to go up the inside of Yates and both rider.s were in too deep to make the comer, running across the dirt and handing the lead to Hacking. '" was leading and we came up on some lapper.s, and they held me up going through the flOWing section [the esses]," Yates said. '" wasn't able to get the run down through there and I guess he [DiSalvo] had a little more steam and got up beside me. 1 saw him there... that's just the way it is in that comer. Icould tell that he wasn't going to be able to get it stopped and turned. Luckily, the hay bales didn't get in our way, and we were able to slip through." ~'Those guys were slowing down, and I knew' had to do it then," DiSalvo said. '" had to go for the pass; if , didn't, it would have been Silly [not to]. , got up next to Aaron, and I think he looked over at me, and I looked over at him. Each of us were letting off of the brakes, a little bit more, a little bit more - at the last minute, we both knew that the whole chicane thing wasn't going to happen." Hacking couldn't believe his luck as he was back into contention with a decentsized gap over first DiSalvo and then Yates on the 14th and ISth laps. "When I was sitting there in third, , was just waiting for one of those guys to make a mistake," Hacking said. "Running that pace with the tires that we have to deal with and the power we have to deal with, everybody's going to make a mistake, especially at this racetrack." As the laps wound down, Yates was the rider in the best position to take the win, as Hacking was still struggling with grip and DiSalvo suddenly fell off the pace. "I made those last couple of attempts to stay out in front of these guys, and after that I just said, 'My body isn't going to take it any- more,''' DiSalvo said. "This is a tough racetrack to ride around. It has been a long day." Gobert worked his way past Roger Lee Hayden and went after Tommy Hayden, with Holden, Haner, Buckmaster and Maya little further back. Yates was able hold on to take the win over Hacking by .448 of a second, with DiSalvo crossing the stripe over six seconds back. Rapp was all alone another 6-plus seconds back, with Tommy Hayden clear of Gobert and Roger Lee Hayden. Holden secured eighth, ahead of Haner, Buckmaster and May. After four races, DiSalvo leads the championship by five points over Yates, 126-121, with Hacking another point back on 120. Tommy Hayden is still in touch in fourth, with 113, as is Rapp, with 104, in fifth. eN INFINEON RACEWAY SoNOMA, CAuFORNIA RESULTS: MAy 14, 2005 (ROUND 4 OF 10) RfPSOL LUBRICANTS SUPERSTOCI(, I.
