I've written in the past to suggest continued
reporting by Henny Ray Abrams from
MotoGP events, so of course I really enjoyed
his report from overseas. He gets the best
quotes from the American riders, and that's
what I really want to read. Please pass along
my thanks to Henny for his great insightful
reporting; I think he digs deeper on key
issues than some of the other available
scribes, which makes his race reports better.
And, his Farce opinion page was a masterpiece. Someone has to shout out loudly and
repeatedly, so that Pickerington gets the
message.
One more thing, please: Scott
Rousseau's column about Jim Rice was
great, really interesting to read. I've been a
subscriber for a long time (began in the
middle 1970s, was away for a while, and
have been back again since 1991) and I
believe really talented writers are somewhat rare in the motorsports reporting
profeSSion. Scott Rousseau and Henny Ray
Abrams are very talented writers and form
the nucleus of your good staff. There's lots
of motorcycle-related content available
these days, especially with the Internet now
fUlly realized, but I prefer to spend my time
reading good, informative and entertaining
reporting, and I get that from Cycle News.

I have to say I had a great time at the AMA
Superbike National at California Speedway.
Kudos to all who competed, and to the
AMA and the Speedway for keeping a good
pace throughout the weekend.
I was watching the Superbike warmup
on Sunday and caught Marty Craggill not
only practicing but more importantly sizing
up those who he thought he could or
should beat. He wasn't racing with the likes
of Spies, Yates, Bostrom, Duhamel or even
Mladin - instead, he spent the morning
warmup racing hard against the likes of
Roberts, Rapp, Hayes and Haskovec. He
would chase them hard in as many laps to
pass whomever he was chasing and then
back off and wait for whoever was next.
They say you always learn something
from these weekends, and that's what
sticks with me most. Congrats on two
strong runs, Marty!

Archives Rules!
I absolutely love Scott Rousseau's Archives!
It is so important that we preserve the history of motorcycle racing for future gener-
ations. No other country can match us
when it comes to flat track racing. His last
subject, Jim Rice, is a man who so deserved
to be honored.
Scott mentions Jim's three Grand
National wins in his rookie season. Perhaps
he meant to say dirt track Nationals, as I am
sure some readers have already sent in emails pertaining to the fact that Brad
Andres, in his rookie season, won five
Grand National wins in 1955: Daytona,
Laconia, Dodge City, Langhorn and Torrey
Pines. All but the Langhorn Mile were road
races, however. Brad went on to win the
championship that year - the only rookie to
have done so.
Thanks for putting out such a great
newspaper.

And Kariya, Too
I thoroughly enjoyed Mark Kariya's coverage of the OMA National "Wildcat 100"
held near Decatur. The Wildcat Ranch is
one of this area's premier venues, and anyone who has attended a race there would
surely feel the same. I would only like to
add that, yes, Mike Snook is one of the
landowners, but the other landowner is
truly the "brains" of the operation. Mary
Mayfield, thank you for all you do for the
sport of off-road motorcycle racing. Your
dauntless efforts are known throughout the
five-state area, and you are truly appreciated. We could never have enough landowners like Mike or Mary. They are truly passionate about our sport and "take action" to
ensure its growth.

No Holden Back
Every human has an opinion, however misguided or misinformed it may be. I'm confused though as to why Cycle News would
choose to give a full page to the opinions of
Randy Holden, which does not even mention anything directly motorcycle related.
Why is a person given this space, usually
reserved for interesting and informative
articles about the world of motorcycles, to
make a half-baked claim that's based on
political beliefs and hearsay taken out of
context? From a work of fiction, no less!
Is it for the controversy? Then why not
allow me to write a full-page response to
refute Mr. Holden's article point by point.
I'll even tie the environmental concern to
motorcycling.
Holden has missed many points. For
example: there are many other threats to
the environment other than carbon dioxide. They might not have been mentioned
in "The Day After Tomorrow," so Holden
probably doesn't know about them. Or
economics, that's a big one.
"Enough oil to last until 2060?" I see, let's
burn it all up in old Mopars and let our
grand kids worry about it. So everyone who
uses an internal-combustion engine has the
same view, huh?
Come on Cycle News. That's crappy
journalism. I can do better.

Vegas SX
I went to the Las Vegas Supercross and was
treated to around one to one and a half
hours of great racing. Unfortunately, I was
also subjected to three hours of advertising
and mindless hype. Give me a break! They
paraded trailers, pickups and bikes and
hawked them during "intermission" when
they weren't even re-grading the track. The
television screen was a continuous barrage
of goods for sale. If I paid $45 to see the
races, why so much hard sell?
Once they were so busy with the sizzle, they didn't even announce the start of
the race. At the conclusion, the interview
was lost in the din of 5000 fireworks going
off. Maybe we should do the interview
when the fireworks are over? I can't wait
for the outdoor season, when we can
watch pure racing.

Thanks, Yamaha
After racing in round two of the STTARS
Supermoto series at Willow Springs, I, like
many other racers, found myself at the parts
counter. With two weeks before the following round, time was crucial. Through the
best efforts of my dealership, upon picking
up my parts I found that not all were delivered. Going into panic mode, I began making phone calls. After talking to some in the
industry, and my calls being returned byothers, I made contact with Mike Guerra of the
Yamaha race department. After telling him
of my plight (and his desire to help a racer),
his efforts allowed me to complete the necessary repairs and make the Fontana grid.
It's rare when a company goes to such
great lengths when your name is not Aaron
Gobert, Chad Reed or Ty Davis. Racing on
a shoestring budget is hard enough, so this
type of help means an awful lot. If I were to
describe Yamaha in four words, they would
be: Great Product, Great People.
