Rodrigues out cold and knocked Tedesco
out of the race wllh a bent bike. It took several laps before Rodrigues could be
removed from the section, which played
havoc with the riders. Several riders would
be penalized for violating the crossed red
flag and double jumping the obstacles
where Rodrigues was being attended to
(see Briefly).
Once Millsaps got out front, he established a solid rhythm and made no mistakes, keeping himself far ahead of the
competition.
"Going into the first tum, a couple people hit and bounced to the outside," Millsaps
said. "Tedesco slid out, and I got by him.
The only person who was ahead of me was
[Brock] Sellards... and I think Marmont. Igot
by them, and I rode my own race from
there. The whoops helped me out this
weekend, and I think that was my strong
point. I don't know who was behind me. I
looked back, and I seen number one. I did-
n't know who it was because they both
looked identical. I was hoping it was Grant
[Langston], because that way we could say
the East Coast was on top."
It was Langston, the new Eastern Region
Champion coming from way down in the
pack off the start to run fifth by the end of
the first lap. Langston then shot past Boost
Mobile/Yamaha of Troy's Sellards for fourth
in Thunder Alley on lap four before passing
Marmont in the right-hander just before the
first triple jump a half a lap later. langston
eventually found himself in a rather physical
battle with Team Makita Suzuki's Broc
Hepler, who was running second. The two
battled back and forth briefly before
langston railed Hepler in the right-hander
before the first triple jump on lap six, sending the young Suzuki rider to the ground.
langston would try to eat into Millsaps lead
for the rest of the race, but he would have
to settle for the runner-up position.
