D ound two of the District 36/Moose NorthI"\ern California Championship Enduro Series
saw Moore & Son's Billy Russell walk away with
another overall victory. Russell's second win of
the series didn't come easily, though, as fellow
KTM riders Patrick Garrahan and Brian Sperle
kept him working hard for it all day.
The Wild Boar Enduro, held at Clear
Creek. started riders out easy with a IS-mph
speed average that most riders were able to
maintain. Mile three was the check-in to the
first special test, where the speed average was
bumped up to 24 mph. With a good mix of
tight trails and fire roads, the check-out was
only (our miles away - but not even the best
riders of District 36 could zero it. Two C-c1ass
riders were the only racers able to score
zeroes: jared Sutliff and Alex Lehr, who carded
times of 0.007 and 0.0 IO! The test's next-best
times were KTM/Fox/Spectro-backed Sperle's
1.07, Garrahan's I.OB, and Russell's 1.082.
Check three was the check·in for the
second special test. Set at 21 mph, the 12-mile
test was made up of tight, rocky trials, slippery
creeks, and barren hills. This time, two B-class
riders logged the best times at the check·out.
with joe Carrera's 1.033 and Matt Meyer's
1.0S3 being a bit qUicker than Russell's 1.075.
All the other racers dropped two or more
points in the test.
A 10-minute free time followed. to help
riders get back on time. The gas stop was right
after the next IQ·mile section of 18-mph fire
roads and two-track trails.
Checks five and six were timekeeping
sections, which most riders zeroed. But that
didn't last long, as riders were hit next with a
22-mile test section that was set at a 24-mph
speed average.
The first four miles of the test were held
on Jackass Trail, which set most riders behind
time. The rest of the test was held on two-

arch Madness means basketball - unless
you're involved in Carolina motocross;
then it means Devil's Ridge's opening race day.
After a mild winter and 220 loads of new dirt,
347 riders were treated to a great, wide racetrack. The lion's share of the Pro purse went to
Yamaha of Lumberton's Jason Bryant: with consistent moto finishes, he claimed both overalls.
After following Charlotte's Blake Hovis
across the finish line in mota one of 12Scc Pro
action, Bryant started the second mota with the
holeshot. This time, it was Hovis chasing, not
leading, as the two front-runners set the pace.
They were followed by Ridge Davis, Joshua
track trails, in moist loam. Russell,
Maxxis/No TOiVFastway's-supported Garrahan,
jPMetalfab.com's james Ptarcinski, Cycle
West's jeff Bauer, and Chris Zito were the only
riders to zero the fast-paced section.
Riders were given another free time and
then sent out on final leg of the race. What
seemed to be an easy ride back to camp soon
turned into a reaJ race, as riders were put onto
a tight 4-mile trail right before the finish.
"I knew Garrahan and Sperle were going to
be tough to beat, so I rode smart and fast
through the tests," said the Dick's Racingsponsored Russell. "Luckily, that last sprint to
the finish didn't catch me off guard."
When the scores were tallied, Russell's
consistent speed and technical skills netted the
winning total of 2.0157. Garrahan was second
with 3.01B7, and Sperle followed in third with
4.0168. Ptarcinski's 4.0241 and Bauer's 5.029B
rounded out the top five.
