When the others were bouncing off each other, Hayden was gaining ground. The margin of victory was 0.951 seconds. "Honestly, a little unexpected," Hayden, who admitted struggling all week, said. DiSalvo said the pass at the end was going to be the final move and it carne after what he thought was a bold move by Hacking. "It was a big move on his part, and I had to counter back with an even bigger move," he said. "I didn't look back after that. I put my head down." Yates carne from fifth to third on the final lap, the extra positions earning him the points that would put him in the championship lead. Then carne Hacking down in fourth and not happy about it. "He's [DiSalvo] just lucky I didn't fali down and Igot my points. That's alii have to say," Hacking said after finishing fIVe seconds behind Hayden. The Graves Motorsports Yamaha teammates were battling each other with such intensity that they lost track of the u timate goal, and suddenly, Kawasaki's Tommy Hayden found himself a race. ':.\t first, I thought I'd try to get on the podium," Hayden said. ':.\bout halfway in, I thought I had a good chance. I was gaining a little bit. About fIVe or six laps to go, I thought I had a really good chance to win if I could get up in there." With help from the Graves Motorsports Yamaha teammates, he did. Hayden went three wide to take the lead on the 16th of 17 laps. On the final lap, the Yamaha teammates went at each other, DiSalvo bumping into Hacking out of mini-Corkscrew. Any hope of catching Hayden was gone. 22 RAy ABRAMS "I just tried to get in there and make something happen," Hayden said. "It worked out." Also gone was Hacking's podium placing, with Yoshimura Suzuki's Aaron Yates pouncing to take third, behind DiSalvo. "Jamie [Hacking] and I must have passed each other 10 times," DiSalvo said, "and it was only a matter of time before our paths crossed and we bumped fairings. And I'm just thankful Iwas on the inside of that. It was a big, big move." Hacking's take? "Those are stupid immature moves," he said. "It cost Yamaha another place on the podium, and it cost some points. It let a Suzuki [Yates] finish on the podium. Now he [Yates] is leading the championship. I didn't say anything to him. I gave him a gesture after the race of what I thought about it." Yates took over the points lead with 63, one more than fifth-place finisher and Daytona winner Vincent Haskovec of Team MAY 4, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS M4 EMGO Suzuki. Tommy Hayden is third with 60. The Superstock race ran just after Supersport with many of the same riders, Hacking among them. What distingUished him from the rest was his allergies. A gusty breeze stirred up the pollen from the lush Barber landscape, and Hacking was tearing up on the line. But it didn't stop him from getting the holeshot and taking the lead. DiSalvo went with him, and the pair was able to pull away until the sixth of 17 laps, when Haskovec joined the leaders. Those three stuck together until the 10th lap, when DiSalvo made the first of his passes to take the lead. "He's just out there lollygagging around," Hacking said. "He passed me the first time - that was cool. He didn't really do nothing. He passed me, and we actually slowed up. So to me that's useless. We're teammates. We need to be working together. So I passed him back." Hayden was inching forward with a keen interest on the infighting. "Before that, they were definitely going for it and, you know, standing each other up a little bit," he said. "That's the only thing I seen. Wasn't nothing really too bad up until I guess the last lap. Till then, they were just slOWing each other down really bad, which was good for me. I liked seeing it. It was helping me catch up." From laps 13 through 16, Hayden made up a spot on every lap. First to fall was Haskovec, then DiSalvo and finally Hacking, who lost the lead to Hayden in the tum-fIVe BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK BIRMINGHAM, AlABAMA RESULTS: APRIL 24, 2005 (ROUND 2 OF 10) SUPERSTOCK FINAL: I.
