Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller is set to join one of his team's former rivals by stepping into the racing world with the opening of Miller Motorsports Park. The track and facility, designed by Alan Wilson, the man behind Barber Motorsports Park and numerous other circuits, will be the iongest and most likely the fastest racetrack in America. And the people behind it see no reason why it can't be on the 2006 AMA Superbike calendar, though they have no MotoGP or World Superbike aspirations. "We are negotiating with Ron [Barrick] for an AMA Superbike race for next year," said Wilson, who, in addition to designing the track, will serve as an advisor. "I would say the probability is pretty high." The date would likely be in june, Wilson said. The world championship event they're most likely to host is a round of the World Endurance Championship. Wilson said that as long as the U.S. hosts MotoGp, there'd be too little corporate support of World Superbike. Wilson has extensive experience in openwheel car racing and believes the track would be perfect for Champ Car or IRL, or whatever the pair morphs into. He's also interested in the American Le Mans and Grand-Am series. WERA has been contacted about hosting a round of the WERA National Series, and Wilson said the track would like to host the vintage machinery of AHRMA. The facility is built on 500 acres in Tooele County, 30 minutes west of Salt Lake City. The main track is 4.5 miles, has a 35OO-footlong straight and runs counterclockwise. The main track can be split into two separate tracks, an East Course and West Course, inside the main course. Those can be run simultaneously to accommodate schools. track days, and testing. Wilson says the 2.24mile East Course is the faster of the two, BORN: A baby boy, Ryder Nicklas, to former Cycle News associate editor Matt Freeman and his wife, Denise, on April 21 in Riverside, California. RESIGNED: After nearly 20 years of employment, White Brothers Racing's john Anderson has resigned, effective immediately. HIRED: john Anderson to the position of director of sales and marketing for more like Barber. The 2.20-mile West Course is more on the Laguna Seca model. Even though the site is flat, elevation is being engineered in. There's also a 3.02 mile Outer Course which uses much of the main track but less of the infield. A go-kart track - which will be capable of hosting world championship events, as well as Supermoto - sits behind the paddock. Wilson said there'd been no discussions to date about hosting the AMA 5upermoto Championship. Wilson said he was interested in talking to riders about the main track. AMA Road Race Manager Ron Barrick went over the plans with Ducati Austin's Neil Hodgson. Wilson also spent time with Freddie Spencer, whose schools could use the new track as a summer alternative to las Vegas Motor Speedway. With very little racing interest in the area, it gives the track a chance to create the market in their image. Part of the aim is to develop a strong field of local riders. They can draw from Salt Lake City as well as Denver and las Vegas. Along with safety, specrators are the top priority. The track has a similar, though not identical, stadium feel as the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, Spain. Wilson says that they're conscious of bringing the racing to the fans and that spectators will be able to see 90 percent of the track. Ground was broken on Monday, April 25, with final paving set for September 15. The paddock area is 23 acres. with a number of buildings that will gradually be phased in. A three-story race-control building is the center of the paddock. and there's a full set of grand prix garages, a set of day garages, a clubhouse, welcome center, concessions and a museum. The museum will grve Larry Miller a chance to show off his collection of Ford Cobras, GT-40s and '60s-era cars. Henny Ray Abrams QTM Inc/Brembo. Lichtle will make his debut with Suzuki backing at the first round of the AMA National Championship Motocross Series at Hangtown near Sacramento, California, on May 22. As of April 22, Pro-Motion Motorsports said that race entries to the AMA Parts Unlimited MiniMoto SX at the Orleans Arena in las Vegas on May 6 are now no longer available as all classes are full. "The buzz on this year's event has been incredible," said Tim Clark, co-promoter of the event. "We have absolutely filled every class to the limit.
