Ashburn and Tanner Byarly. Mid-State Motorsports-sponsored Ashburn worked his way up to the lead after getting a c1ose-to-lastplace start. By the creek section, he was mid pack. Shortly thereafter, he got around Dustin Milam and Dylan Ritter when they were stuck in a rut. He then moved into first place when he passed Adam Creasor on a straightaway and then pushed for the finish. "No one can catch him [Ashburn] anymore, he's so fast." Creasor said. The two front-runners had a flawless ride, while third-placed Shane Pena fought with the elements. Ashburn had a 40-second lead over Creasor, who was consistently pacing himself in second place. On the other hand, Pena, after the race, was covered in mud from head to toe. "There's a lot of mud out there," Pena noted. "I would have caught up to them if I had another pair of goggles. But it was rough, because I was hit with a lot of rocks." In Junior B class, Sarge's Cycles/Sinisalosupported Byarly had the best ride. He was in third place off the start, and he navigated into the lead by the third turn, racing faster than many of the A riders. He came in first, with Zach Nash taking second and Tyler Carter finishing in third. '" had a good ride and was closing in on first," said the Thor/pro Taper/RK Chains/Effex Graphics-supported Nash. "I passed Tyler several times, but I could never really make it stick until the last lap. I passed him, and then he hit somebody." In the Mini class, Bridgestone/Renthalbacked Dylan Cox got the holeshot and then had to work for his win. He suddenly lost the lead, and then five riders passed him when his bike started to give him problems. "I think my choke was on," Cox reported, "so after I fixed it, I passed three of them on the straightaway, and the rest, I had to tightsqueeze them through the woods." Not far behind him, Cody Schoettmer, Dylan Majors and Wesley Bolton freight-trained into the top four poSitions. Going through the creek sections, Anderson Power Sports/Tire Balls/Safety Tech-backed Schoettmer was at his best. He just put his head down and charged for a splash into second. Preston Evans finished in second place in the Pee Wee (4-6) class. "The best part of the track was those swirly things," said Evans, "and they really didn't have anything that I didn't like." Sports Riders Associatian of Colarado M&M Saye's Movin' On Up By DEANNA KWAK COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, FEB. 27 D oug Moyes' M&M Connections hosted an outstanding race for SRAC racers. Both the north and south tracks proved to be fun for all riders. The early morning race of the 125cc Novice class left some fingers frozen by race's end. Tucker Saye, however, turned up the heat to win the overall with a 1-2 punch, giving him his last mark he needed to move up to the 12Scc B class. Saye's phrase for the day might have simply been, "Don't crash." With a gate of 35 riders, the holeshot went to Jacob Agenbroad in the first 125cc Novice heat. Brian Osif, Lance Eveatt and Jeremy Nelms were left in a turn-one pileup. Graham Hill qUickly took the lead, but Saye reeled him in, followed closely by Philip Cowan. Dicing for first place, Saye made it dear he wanted up from badly, but Hill held him off. With this oneline, frozen track being so unforgiving, Hill made a couple of mistakes, and Saye got around him to claim first place in moto one. Hill came in second and Cowan was third. The second heat saw Eveatt and Michael Kozub out front, with Eveatt coming out of turn one in front and on two wheels. Eveatt, riding a two-stroke, was surrounded by four-stroke riders Osif, Kozub and Saye, all trying to claim that number-one spot. Saye pulled into second place by lap two, with Osif in third and Kozub in fourth. Saye went to the inside, but first was retaken by Eveatt. The checkers waved for Eveatt first, with Saye a close second, Kozub third, Wade Simpson fourth and Osif fifth. The 50cc class provided a lot of action for the spectators. The 17 riders took off out of the gate, with Greer Marshall being the qUickest to claim the holeshot in both motos. Evan Jenkins, 60 Austin Powell and Nash Greer were also at the front of the pack. Hunter Reihart, Garett Ludwig and Greer waged a tight battle for third place. Some wild racing ensued, ending with a tangle of riders crapped under their bikes, but the medics got those riders up and rolling again quickly. By lap three, Reihart, after a bad start, had moved into second place, going past the white flag on a mission. But when the checkered flag waved, ic was for Marshall out front and in a different time zone for first place, with Reihart in second and Greer in third. The second moto started with Marshall in front, Reihart in second and Powell in third. The battle was between Hubert Price and Jenkins for fourth place, with Jenkins fighting hard to finish in that spot. Marshall took the overall with I-I finishes. Reihart came close with 2-2 finishes, third place was taken by Powell, fourth went to Jenkins, and fifth went to Price. RESULTS SO CL-I: I. Devin McGinley (KTM); 2. Ross Roark (KTM); 3. By GUY COULSTON FERNLEY, NV, FEB. 27 The first round of the AHRMA Northwest Post-Vintage season got under way in beautiful Fernley ("Ferntucky" to the locals), Nevada. The challenging sand crack never fails to remind riders that they "ain't so young anymore." Young Robert Beaupre only comes out once or twice a year to race with the old guys, and apparently it's true that there's no substitute for age or horsepower! Just about the youngest guy out there, on arguably one of the fastest bikes (a 1983 Honda 480), Beaupre led both motos wire to wire and still looked fresh! Why, there ought to be a law! But one must give the young man his due: We were all his age once, but very few were as fast. His win wasn't quite as easy as it sounds, though, as Steve Parker and Jaico Jacobs - each with more than 20 years on the youngster (sorry, guys) - made a real race of ie, as they stayed right behind Beaupre for all eight laps, Parker edging oU[ Jacobs in the first moto and Jacobs just sliding in ahead of Parker in che second stanza. In GP 500cc Novice action, it was Chuck Nerviani leading Paul Belluomini in both motos for the win. Belluomini brought out his "new" 1978 Maico 440 but was unable [0 get it going and had to reiy on his backup bike, a 1979 Honda 250. Nerviani's Maico 490 was just a bit too much for Belluomini's Honda. The support of the sponsors - Honda Yamaha Sport in Yuba City, and Principal Mortgage Group - makes the season possible. Without them, we'd just be out trail ridin'! Also, the efforts of Ric and Sam Tipton, volunteer race coordinators extraordinaire, are much appreciated! Remember, old bikes = big fun.
