AMA Hot Shoe National Series STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAVE HOENIG/FLATTRAKFOTOS.COM A GNC Expert rider Butch Brandon turned promoter and brought professional motorcycle racing back to the Houston Raceway Park Half-Mile, hosting round three f the AMA Hot Shoe National Series, which saw many of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Series stars on hand in the hope of using the race as a tune-up for the upcoming Joliet Half-Mile (round two of the AMNFord Series). Memphis Shades/Parts Unlimited's J.R. Schnabel got the holeshot in the 12-lap SOScc Expert main but was qUickly swallowed up by Mid America HarleyDaVidson/Jones Powersports/KTM's Kenny Cool beth and Saddlemen/Lancaster Harley-DaVidson/Dodge Brothers' Jared Mees. Coolbeth and his KTM held off the repeated challenges of Mees' Honda. Schnabel was right with the leaders until lap nine, when his Yamaha expired. Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford's Willie McCoy slipped into third over SJS Racing/Parker Store's Rob Pearson and Team Motorcyclist Post's Logan Myers. KK Supply/F&S Harley-Davidson's A.J. Eslick and Steve Murray held off the struggling Joe Kopp for sixth, and Henry Wiles led Ed Fatzinger/KK Supply's Dan Gedeon and fast qualifier Jimmy Wood to round out the field. The second main of the night was the S05cc ProSport 12 lapper. Georgia's Chase Sconyers and New York's Gary Conklin renewed their Florida wars, with the Low Country Mechanic/Supertrapp's Sconyers leading the first five laps. AGRlBinghampton Honda's Gary Conklin was right on Sconyers rear wheel until laps six, when he then took over and pulled to the win. Sconyers got the holeshot, with Conklin and Jeff Steinberger right behind him. Steinberger spun down in turn one as the field scattered to miss him. Steinberger got into the infield, and the race continued uninterrupted. Well behind the leaders, Kent Briggs (Briggsauto.com/ Terry Poovey) and Alex Wood (Ron Wood Racing/Maxxis) had a great race over third, with the nod going to Briggs. RlJ Performance/Ron Bailey-backed Danny Stookesberry had a lonely race and filled out the top five. Thomas Pulliam, Jermaine Bacosa, Lucas Scherb, John Olmstead, Lew Woods and Logan Scherb had a tight battle going for sixth and finished in that order. The 12-rider 750/1 OOOcc Expert main was the last race to hit the track, and Mees shot his Harley-Davidson into the lead, with Schnabel right behind him. But Schnabel was racing at the site of his first Grand National win, and he apparently remembered the quick way around the track. The West Bend, Wisconsin-based charger stole the win with a bold last-lap blitz of Mees. The two leaders had pulled well clear of a tight race over the last spot in the winners' circle. Latus HarleyDaVidson/Jones Powersports' Joe Kopp, Las Vegas Harley-Davidson/Schaffer's Harley-Davidson's Geo Roeder, Cooibeth and Pearson were locked together as they probed for an opening. On lap 12, both Coolbeth A 50 APRIL 27,2005 • CYCLE NEWS and Pearson got by Roeder and started to work on Kopp to no avail..Coolbeth gave Pearson J.R.
