After what seemed like an eternity (but Z ~ was actually only two or three minutes). ~ McConnell and Jessop got free from the =;; machinery and rose to their feet. However. iii Strong was still pinned, motionless, under three ~ bikes. Finally. Strong was freed, and while a.. stunned, bruised and scraped, he suffered no serious injuries. Jessop's and Strong's bikes were too badly damaged, so those two missed the LCQ restart. which sent Cooley, McConnell and Grant onto row two of the main event. On the front row for the six-rider, six-lap main were Venegas, Mann and Kemp. When the gate was released. Venegas took the lead with authority. With the LCQ mayhem still fresh in their minds. there were no heroics in this main event - just some good racing that saw the last lap end the same as the first: Venegas, Mann, Kemp, Cooley, McConnell and Grant. Fighting off Kolb and Stamford, Connecticut's Lawrence Somma to the finish line, Hermant won the IO-Iap Mad Dog main. By AMANDA URSINI TRENTON, NJ, FEB. 25 or the third straight season, a critical round in the World Championship Ice Racing Series was held at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. Each year, the fan base has grown, as has the participant turnouts - a healthy sign for the sport and for the future of the ICE/WSRA program. This event featured racing in the Nitro Speedway Motorcycles and Flat Track Mad Dog divisions. The first of two rounds of four-rider, four-lap Nitro Speedway heats were won by Charlie "The Edge" Venegas from San Bernardino, California; Charlie "The Tuna" Cooley from Corona, California; and Bolton. England's James "Mad Dog" Mann. Scoring second-round heat wins were Mann, Venegas. and Cary, North Carolina's Ronny "Rock Star" Kemp. The Flat Track Mad Dog class is for stockframe production motorcycles with singlecylinder four-stroke engines not exceeding 155cc. Each racer rode one six-lap heat race to determine his starting position in the main. Heat-race winners were Bill Hermant from Sparks, Nevada, and Scott Kolb from Saugerties, New York. Next up was the Nitro Speedway Bike lastchance qualifier, and it was a wild one: six riders racing for the three remaining spots in the main, with only four laps to get 'er done!
