Honda-mounted Jeff "Too Tall" Loop proved to be in a class of his own, as he emerged with overall wins in the 12Scc and 250cc Intermediate classes. as well as in the Schoolboy and 450cc Four-Stroke Non-Pro classes. Ricky James shot out to the early lead in the opening 12Scc Intermediate moto and stayed there until a fall dropped him to third near the midway point. Loop was running a close second and inherited the top spot for the mota win. James recovered to close to the back fender of runner-up Curtis Malins at the checkers. Brett Mountain led the 35-rider field out of Glen Helen's sweeping first turn as mota two got under way, but it was Johan Carlsson leading just a few turns in. Loop sliced his way up into second place by lap two and hounded Carlsson for the duration for a close second-place finish, which was good enough for the overall. Carlsson's 5-1 tally topped the 2-3 score of Malins for third. Danny Johnson (4-7) was fourth. Derrick Murphy and Loop argued over the 250cc Intermediate first-mota lead up until the last lap. when Loop inched away for the victory. Murphy held off James for second, with Anthony Charette landing in fourth. James got the holeshot in moto two. but Loop was out front and pulling away by the completion of lap one. Loop easily collected the win, and with it the overall honors. over James. Charette went 4-3 for third. Murphy had opening-lap problems but battled his way up into sixth place for fourth in the final standings. Both the Schoolboy and 450cc Four-Stroke Open Non-Pro classes were more of the same, as Loop turned consistently good starts into four more moto wins. Carlsson carded a pair of seconds in the Schoolboy field, over Malins (3-3). Eric Wright (2-2) and Kenny Martin (3-4) made it a Honda sweep of the top three in the Four-Stroke racing. Antonio Balbi Jr. got around a fast-starting Justin Mace to take the 250cc Pro first-moto win. Daniel Sani finished the moto in second and then backed that up with another second-place -4.
