With a dirt·pit start, the Ridge Runners Enduro Team sent 181 riders into a single-track U-turn, where the first row slid into a heap of bikes. Lucas Comeaux got the holes hot, with Stephen Reed right on his tail, scarcely missing the carnage. Myatt, who was jumbled in the pileup, scrambled to lift his bike, but he entered the woods dead last. Reed led them all into woods, which featured every type of terrain imaginable: hills, downhills, deep sand, tight single-track, and roots. Cliff Ousley made his way past Comeaux and battled with Reed. After lap one, Reed had the fastest lap time for the day: 22 minutes and 46 seconds on the 9.7-mile course. With every lap, as Reed put seconds on Ousley, Myatt was sneaking up. picking off riders. Reed was in the lead on every lap, but he scored a rare DNF near the end of the race; Tangling with a lapped rider in the tight woods, he was sent into a mess of vines. Myatt made his move and took the lead position just in time. "It [his start] calmed me down a lot," Myatt said later. "It put my head on straight. I got around Cliff on the third lap. Then Stephen had a pretty good crash; his back end came up and over the front, right in front of me." Myatt noted that his bike was in top condition thanks to Hattiesburg Cycles' Paul Cox and Mike Sanders, and he also thanked his orthopedic surgeon. Buddy Savoie, and his physical therapist, Laine Nurrette. "They did wonders for me," Myatt said. "Without them, I wouldn't have been back to riding." Ousley finished second, followed by Suzuki rider Carsten Cagel. In the Open B class, 16-year-old Justin Robinson put a nearly six-minute lead on his opponent Damon Hallmark. "I liked the race," said Robinson, a sophomore from Sumrall, Mississippi, who also finished 13th overall. "I won here last year. and I had a good feeling about this one.
