X-treme Internatianal AMA Ice Racing Sports Series Round 9: Dodge Arena Showdown at Dodge By GRAHAM REEVE HIDALGC!, lX, FEB. 1 B A Heath Hamblen was on fire in the 125cc junior class, as the Yamaha rider swept both motos to take the victory. jason Gibbons was the closest rider to Hamblen, and he finished second in both motas for second overall. There was an ongOing battle for third in both motos, but it went to Electrix-hacked Mike Passarge (6-5). Sean Zuclich (5-7) took the fourth-place poSition, and Ryan Skinner (4-9) finished fifth. Sweden's Kenny Olsson - Anthony Barlow lined up on the unfavored gate four. Olsson was in gate three. On the first run, Gary Phelps dropped it in the first turn; in the rerun. Canadian Nick Fafard made the perfect start off gate two and kept both Olsson and Barlow at bay for four very fastlaps. Heat two saw Scott Courtney take a very good win from Adrian Newman, with David Meldrum back in third place. In the first race of the second round of qualifying heats, the race was stopped on the fourth lap when Phelps and Meldrum got hooked up on the back straight. Referee Graham Reeve couldn't decide exaaly who was to blame and therefore called the heat complete as it stood at the end of the third lap, which gave Meldrum the win, Phelps second place, and Alan Ferrow third. In the next heat, Barlow got the win he needed, but with Courtney taking second place, it was Courtney who secured a place in the main final, while Barlow had to wait on the result of the last qualifier before knowing if a front-row spot in the main would be his or not. As it happened, Olsson took the win in that last qualifier, over Fafard and Meldrum, which meant that Olsson, Fafard and Courtney took to the front row for the main; Barlow was left to do battle in the last-chance qualifier with Meldrum, Newman, Phelps and Ferrow. With temperatures in the 60s, and after weeks without rain, the Woodland track was the driest it's been this year. Consequently, riders just flocked to Woodland, filling up classes. The 8Scc junior class was a t'No-way battle between up-and-comers Mike Pontious and Brad Frace. In the first moto, Pontious slipped around a little on the freshly watered track, and Frace got out into the lead. Despite Pontious' advances, Frace held on to the lead to take the win. In the second mota, it was the fast-starting Pontious who jumped out into the lead. This time, it was Frace who had to try to work his way past. While it was a good battle, Pontious stuck it out and took the win. Frace took 52 Overall winner Scott Courtney wasn't horsing around in Hidalgo, Texas, site of round nine of the X-treme International AMA Ice Racing Sports Series. row to pass both Newman and Meldrum and join heat winner Barlow and third-placed Meldrum in the main. Courtney, coming off the prime pole gate position in the final, made no mistakes on this very long track and held off strong challenges from Olsson for all six laps. Barlow got a creditable third place. Fafard lost momentum from the outside gate on the front row and slipped to fifth at the checkered flag. This roller-coaster championship ride really is tight now, and once again the lead has changed hands, as Olsson now leads Barlow at the top by just two points. However, this night belonged to young Courtney, who has shown great maturity throughout the series; this result is just the tonic he needed with the new Premier League season back in Britain on the horizon. Mystery Dance's Daniel Browning grabbed the holeshot at the start of the four-hour event but was quickly displaced by McDonald and Ergle, while Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Team K&N #2 followed. Ergle hounded McDonald for several laps until he was able to use lapped traffic to make a pass. For the next few laps, McDonald and Ergle swapped the lead, each taking advantage of a lapper to make his move. "It was all just luck of the draw," Ergle said of his duel with McDonald. "I scraped him off once in traffic in turn three, and he did the same to me in four. just whoever got caught up in traffic got passed." Eventually, McDonald was able put some distance on Ergle, and he and teammate Gruy began their methodical dismantling ofthe field. Toward the end of one hour of racing, Team K&N #2 moved into second after RS Express team member Tom Hoover tangled with a lapper, which dropped them several laps off the pace. Meanwhile, Team Jesus, comprised of Derek Wagnon and Zac Chapman, began quickly moving up through the field after spending four or five laps breaking in a new piston. Wagnon and Mystery Dance's Browning battled for several laps before Wagnon made a pass stick, putting Team jesus up into third. By the third hour, RS Express was able to rebound from Hoover's mishap and work his way back into the number-two position, while Team K&N #2 found themselves moving in the oppOSite direaion after a series of unfortunate events, ultimately landing in 34th position for the day. At the finish, Team K&N # I crossed the line with a full seven laps over RS Express, with Team jesus just seconds back in third. Team Mystery Dance finished fourth overall. Team Extreme Powersports was sixth overall and top finisher in the AF I Racing Formula Five Mini Endurance class. Excel Racing, Thunder Donk Racing and Warren Racing finished top Formula Seven bike, while STD Racing was the top Formula Six finisher.
