Brandes snagged the holes hot on his Sean Hummel Racing/BR I/Dr. D/skin/Bell-backed Honda CRF, followed closely by Holland. and the two immediately started pulling away from the pack. The rough Brandes Puts In the EHort at E Street By Kyle Chisholm (2) leads Steve Dumond (211), Sco" Frederickson (520), Eric Braun (811), Todd Wichtner (179) and the rest of the pack at the start of the combined Over 30 Pro and 25Occ/500cc Expert contest at the second annual National Vet Motocross Championship at Motocross of Marion County in Reddick, FlOrida. while Brandes and Holland's lead grew. Johnson gOt it done on lap two and slowly started reeling in Holland. Four laps later, Johnson moved into second place and started to work on Brandes, who had pulled ahead slightly but was still in sight. These three were going so fast that on lap nine they started encountering lapped traffic! Brandes moved through without effort and held on for first. followed by Johnson and Holland. Yamaha pilot Eric Nye. another racer with Pro AMA Motocross experience, finished a slightly distant fourth. The first 12Scc moto would play out in similar fashion, except Holland took the early lead but succumbed to Brandes' pressure on lap three. Johnson had to make an early pass on Nye for third but couldn't challenge Holland for second. Brandes, Holland and Johnson were the top three. The second 2S0cc Pro moto played out like a rerun - except this rerun was worth watching. The Brandes-Holland-Johnson train steamed forward, well ahead of the rest of the pack. Small gaps between the riders would form and then disappear, but the running order APRIL 13,2005 • CYCLE NEWS track stopped Johnson in his tracks on the fifth lap, forcing an unfortunate DNF. Brandes rolled through for the win laps later, ahead of Holland and Nye. A perfect I-I earned Brandes the overall win. Holland and Nye joined Brandes on the 2S0cc podium. What could Johnson do with a better start? That question was answered in the second 12Scc Pro moto, as Brandes rocketed through lap one with Johnson close behind in one of the best battles of the day. Johnson had the speed, and he overtook Brandes on the third lap and never looked back. "He Uohnson] got by me," Brandes commented, "and I just couldn't match his pace that moto.'· Brandes took no chances and securely held down second place for the overall victory. johnson (3-1) finished second overall, followed by Holland (2-4).
