D ace conditions were great for the second
l'annual National Vet Motocross Championship. More than 200 riders attended this
year's event, and that number is sure to grow
for next year's championship. This event was
orchestrated by longtime Florida promoter Lou
Whitney of ProS ports USA and held at the
beautiful facility at Motocross of Marion County.
Steve Dumond wasted little time taking the
lead in the Over 35 Expert class, ahead of Todd
was Mezie, followed closely by Allen. Godoy
and Keith Beal. When the white nag came out.
Mezie and Allen had gapped the field. with
Allen all over Mezie. In one of the final right-
hand turns, Mezie left the inside open, and
Allen slipped by to take the point. and he held
it to the checkers.
The Over 60 Masters class featured a hard-
fought battle between Al Gardner. Fred Klipple
and Len Edgar. In moto one, Gardner slowly
pulled away from the field. leaving Klipple.
Edgar and Robert Dare to battle among
themselves. Mota two saw Gardner leave the
Wichtner and Gary Clingan. Dumond came off
the gate in second place but made a qUick pass
on Wlchtner on the opening lap and never
looked back. The second moto was a carbon
copy of the first, as Dumond didn't hesitate
about taking the leap on the opening lap. The
field behind, with Klipple running a strong
second and Duke Barwick in tow. Barwick
battle was for third place, with Clingan and
smoking the 12Scc Expert class and the
2s0cc/SOOcc Expert contest. Chisholm put on
a clinic, winning by more than half a lap in all of
his moros. Billy Nelson also proved he is a hot
up-and-comer by winning the Vouth (16-24)
and Four-Stroke classes. In the 8scc (12-15)
Tom Engel dicing for it to the finish.
Dumond came out swinging in the Over 30
Vet Pro class. leading every single lap of both
motos. The real battle on the track was
between Wichtner, Shane McEleaney and Eric
Braun. In the end, the win went to Dumond,
followed by Wichtner. McEleaney and Braun.
The other big Vet Pro race was the Over
40 Senior Pro class. The first moto saw Ted
Godoy take the win, followed by Sam Allen
and Mike Mezie. The second moto was a barn
burner, with Mezie taking the holes hot and
Allen hot on his tail. At the halfway point, it
took a spill. letting Edgar and Dare slip by
before moto's end.
In the Support classes. Kyle Chisholm
showed why he is a top Florida rider by easily
class, Colren Maynard and James Decotis
battled in both motos, with Maynard coming
away with the overall.

T
he Mutant Motorsports/Mission Motorcycles/Tracy Chevrolet/Extreme Motorsports Winter Storm Series returned to E
Street MX for round four, a Honda-contingency-paying event. "National number" Pros
Michael Brandes, Rusty Holland and Casey
Johnson were all riding red but thinking green.
johnson and Holland finished 22nd and 23rd
overall, respectively, in the 250cc class of the
AMA Motocross Series last year with Team
MDKJLinked-in.com. Brandes was set to join
the team as the I 25cc-c1ass rider but sat out
most of the season due to injury. With these
riders, a battle up from in the Pro class was
guaranteed.
Nineteen Pros lined up at the gate for the
first 250cc Pro moto. Brandes snagged the
holes hot on his Sean Hummel Racing/BR I/Dr.
D/skin/Bell-backed Honda CRF, followed
closely by Holland. and the two immediately
started pulling away from the pack. Michael
Gorda held down third for the first lap, with
Johnson patiently trying to find a way around,

while Brandes and Holland's lead grew. Johnson
gOt it done on lap two and slowly started
reeling in Holland. Four laps later, Johnson
moved into second place and started to work
on Brandes, who had pulled ahead slightly but
was still in sight. These three were going so fast
that on lap nine they started encountering
lapped traffic! Brandes moved through without
effort and held on for first. followed by Johnson
and Holland. Yamaha pilot Eric Nye. another
racer with Pro AMA Motocross experience,
finished a slightly distant fourth.
The first 12Scc moto would play out in
similar fashion, except Holland took the early
lead but succumbed to Brandes' pressure on lap
three. Johnson had to make an early pass on
Nye for third but couldn't challenge Holland for
second. Brandes, Holland and Johnson were the
top three.
The second 2S0cc Pro moto played out like
a rerun - except this rerun was worth
watching. The Brandes-Holland-Johnson train
steamed forward, well ahead of the rest of the
pack. Small gaps between the riders would
form and then disappear, but the running order

track stopped Johnson in his tracks on the fifth
lap, forcing an unfortunate DNF. Brandes rolled
through for the win laps later, ahead of Holland
and Nye. A perfect I-I earned Brandes the
overall win. Holland and Nye joined Brandes
on the 2S0cc podium.
What could Johnson do with a better start?
That question was answered in the second
12Scc Pro moto, as Brandes rocketed through
lap one with Johnson close behind in one of the
best battles of the day. Johnson had the speed,
and he overtook Brandes on the third lap and
never looked back.
"He Uohnson] got by me," Brandes
commented, "and I just couldn't match his pace
that moto.'·
Brandes took no chances and securely held
down second place for the overall victory.
johnson (3-1) finished second overall, followed
by Holland (2-4).
And that closed the lap sheets on another
unbelievably fast Mutant MotorsportS race!
