Changing of the Guard

t was a changing of the guard - sort of - at the
CMC's MTA West Golden State Nationals'
Southern Qualifier Round at Glen Helen Raceway Park, when participants from three continents somehow found sunny weather between
the storms that had been pelting the area with
record-setting downpours that made the track
an island in the middle of a stream.
Mike Alessi, making his final American
appearance before trekking to Europe to gain
some experience at International GP racing
before returning home to contest the
Nationals, took on some formidable factory
talent from japan and scored two impressive
victories, nailing both the I25cc and 250cc Pro
20-minute races from start to finish. japanese
visitors Kenjito Tsuj! and Akira Narita rode
Hondas to second and third in the 18-rider
250cc field; Narita rode in Alessi's wake to
score runner-up in the 125s.
"Jeff [Mike's brother] and I are leaving
Tuesday morning [February 15], and we'll be
racing three international races in March," said
the Red Bull factory KTM racer from Apple
Valley, California, after his morning double.
"Then jeff'lI come back home to race here,
and I'll race the first three GPs."
Leaning back in a chair in the Glen Helen
tower, the elder Alessi brother watched as
Poulsbo, Washington's Ryan Villopoto dissected
the Intermediate fields in much the same way
Mike had done before turning pro last fall.
"Ryan's definitely the rider to beat now,"
Mike noted.
The 125cc, 250cc, Schoolboy and FourStroke fields would concur. As he did at round
three two weeks earlier, Villopoto, who will
not turn pro until after his 17th birthday in
leaving him only one moto victory shy of the
I
KX85-mounted teammate Sean Geiser, giving
no indication of having broken a collarbone a
few weeks before. It appeared Morros was on
his way to the Supermini win on Sunday, but the
mud apparently took its toll: While enjoying
another comfortable lead, his chain derailed. He
got it back on and made his way back to the
pits, where he stayed for a chain-tightening
session before returning to the fray and
salvaging second place.

CMC Golden State record set by Mike Alessi
two years ago. Unlike two weeks ago, when
was battling a flu bug, Villopoto was healthier
and stronger off the line, establishing leads
early in nearly every race. His closest rivalry
came from Acton, California's Derreck
Murphy, the 15-year-old Thousand Oaks/J.
Jones/Race Tech/Thor/Dunlop-backed Yamaha
rider who wound up riding shotgun in both the
Schoolboy and 250cc Intermediate contests.
The SmithjVans/Alpinestars/661-supported
Villopoto also had some tough opposition
from Robert Memoli, who powered his
EVS/Shift/RG3/FMF/Honda of Houston 250F
to the runner-up honors in the 125cc
Intermediate class.
Top Junior for the fourth round in a row
was Bruce Rutherford, who aced the 1255, the
largest field of the weekend, aboard his
Temecula Cycles Yamaha. Meanwhile, the BOs
were led by Jake Canada of Sun City,
California, who scored overalls in the 80cc
(14-16) and BOcc Open classes aboard a
RenthaI/5py/Maxima/Hansen Motorsports
Yamaha. Canada, riding his only Golden State
meeting of the season, had four superb motos
against Team Green Kawasaki jockey Michael
Hall of Murrieta. California, splitting the race
wins in the Open and Supermini classes. Hall's
second-moto Supermini win gave him the
overall edge.
