March 15-20, 2005 MOTOCROSS xtreme Team Green's flying ace, Ryan Villopoto, pulled out all the stops at Oak Hill Motocross Park when he claimed six championships at the 29th annual FMF GNC International Final, presented by Answer, Pro Taper and MSR. Villopoto, who hails from Paulsbo, Washington, went to the podium to claim his victories in the I25cc Intermediate Stock, 12Scc Intermediate Modified, 125cc Open, 2S0cc Intermediate Stock, 250cc Intermediate Modified and 2S0cc E ~ 29th Annual FMF GNC International Final In the meantime, Lichtle's American Suzuki teammate, Jason Lawrence, was unbeatable in all four motos of the 2S0cc A Modified and 2S0cc Pro Modified classes, taking both titles in front of Suzukimounted Brad Smith of Michigan. "I got a top-five start and tried to work my way to the front," Lawrence said after his final 250cc Pro Modified moto. It was a three-way Suzuki battle into lap three between Smith, Lichtle and Lawrence. Lawrence blew by Lichtle and caught Smith. "Once out front I just tried to ride smooth to the finish," Lawrence said . • IXFour-Stroke Non-Pro Modified classes. When it was all done, Villopoto was visibly happy with his performance. "The track is really awesome, and the long motos were great," Villopoto said. "This is what I've been training for." After a disappointing finish the previous week in Lake Whitney, Texas, Nico Izzi made his mark at the GNC Final in the 85cc (14-15) Modified, Supermini and 85cc Open classes. Izzi was en route to a fourth win in the 85cc (14-15) Stock class when a crash off the start placed him near the back of the pack and Extreme Team Green's Kyle Cunningham into the lead. Once he remounted, Izzi had the fastest lap times, closing in on Cunningham by two seconds every lap, but Cunningham managed to elude the American Suzuki rider at the checkered nag to take the championship. "Nico fell over three turns off the start, and I just wanted to ride a great race," Cunningham said from the podium. KTM riders dominated all the 65cc classes. Cooper Webb of North Carolina won the 65cc Stock and Modified (7-9) classes, and Brandon Mays of New York won the 65cc Stock and Modified (10-1 I) classes. California's Jessy Nelson won the 65cc Open class, with Mays in the runnerup spot. Earlier in the week, American Suzuki's Josh Lichtle had a bad get-off in one of his first motos of the 250cc A Modified class, but he rallied and put together a 1-2 for the win in the I25cc A Modified class and then tallied a 3-2 moto score in the 125cc Pro Modified class for another championship title. 36 "I got off to an early lead and did all I could to hold on to it," Lawrence's defeated competitor Smith said. Young Team Green rider Cody Dickey of nearby Weatherford made the podium in third, after just passing Lichtle, saying, "I was just trying the best I could. I raced almost the whole moto with no rear brakes." When the threesome returned to the podium in the 250cc A Modified class near the end of the event on Sunday, second-place finisher Dickey said, "I was pushing as hard as I could. I got a terrible start and rode as hard as I could. The track is awesome, and I couldn't ask for a better end of the week." Smith finished with a 2-4 moto score for second overall in the 250cc A Modified class. "I spun real bad off the start," Smith said. "I hit someone and bent my shift lever in the woods, but I pushed to the end, passing Kilbarger for fourth over the last tabletop. 1knew if 1got at least fourth, I'd end up second overall." Jason Lawrence used his pair of aces for the title. "I got a second-place start and rode some hard laps," Lawrence said.
