AHRMA Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Series STORY AND PHOTOS BY MATT BENSON illed as AHRMA's pre-Daytona warmup race, round one of the AHRMA Progressive Suspension Historic Cup Series was decidedly on the chilly side, with a brisk wind and temperatures struggling to reach 50. At least it was an improvement over the preceding day's practice for the approximately 200 entries. For David Roper, who was fleeing the snow and cold of New York, it seemed like paradise, as he warmed up with a trio of class wins to kick off the new season. In 250 Grand Prix, Roper and his 1966 Aermacchi pulled away, with Jonathan White, Robbie Nigl and Paul Germain in tow. Germain, the defending class champion aboard a '68 Yamaha, soon moved up to second, though Roper maintained a small gap over him. On the fourth of the six laps, the Ducati-mounted White pulled away from Nigl and joined the two leaders. Things tightened up further on the last lap, but Roper kept his hold on the lead until the checkered flag called things to a halt. Germain hung on to claim second over White. Roper, a seven-time 500 Premier-class champion, again is carrying the number-one plate, and at Carolina Motorsports Park he showed why. He rocketed to an immediate lead on his 1961 Norton Manx and never looked back, winning by a huge margin. Peter Politiek Jr. of the Netherlands, riding a Seeley, broke clear of Honda-mounted Wes Orloff to finish second. Roper's third race was 350 GP, and again he dominated, this time aboard a 1970 Harley-Davidson Sprint. Roper actually worked his way up to second overall in a race that was combined with modern thumpers. The only rider ahead of him was B 44 Super Mono 2 winner Colin Fraser on a Yamaha. Second in 350 GP went to Germain on a Ducati. Alex McLean was a double winner in the old-bike classes, battling on his Norton Manx with Art Farley in Pre-1940 and then taking an easy victory in Class C. Farley and his '39 Harley WLDR earned the win in Class C Handshift. Classics 60s was full of ups and downs as McLean fell on the first lap and race leader Rusty Lowry dropped out after four of the eight laps. BSA Gold Star rider John Cooper was there to capitalize, taking the class win. One of the day's best races was in the allHonda Sportsman 350 class. Defending class champion Daryl Foster of Panorama City, California, grabbed the lead, chased by Scott Turner. Foster opened a lead over Turner by the second lap, but then the Floridian began creeping up on him and on the fifth lap grabbed the lead and opened a gap. A lap, later, however, Foster was in the point position again, trying to shake Turner. On the closing lap, Foster was able to maintain his lead of three or four bikelengths as the pair worked through traffic toward the checkered flag. Tim Joyce used an unusual reversed-head Triumph 500 twin - carburetors pointed forward and exhaust to the rear - to capture the Sportsman 500 class. He was pressured for a time by class champ Andrew Cowell on another Triumph. The new Triumph Thruxton Cup Challenge got off to a fast start, with 12 nicely prepared entries in the spec class for the 900cc retro cafe-racer twins. Ted Cobb of Cumming, Georgia, riding a machine fielded by Mota Britalia, showed that he'll be a contender for the championship (and a trip to MARCH 30, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS England) by winning the inaugural event. Joyce, on a D&D Cycles entry, was second, followed by Robert McClendon III and William Stranahan. In Sound of Singles/Battle of Twins action, Kawasaki-mounted John Staska, returning to AHRMA action after being injured iast year at Daytona, doubled in BOT F-2 and F-3. Class champ Mark Hatten captured BOT F-I aboard a 2005 Ducati. Fred Eiker was another double winner, taking Super Mono on a Honda-Rotax hybrid and Sound of Thunder on a Ducati. McClendon captured the win in Production Singles with a Honda CRF, ahead CN of Gary Dipietro's KTM SMR.
