AHRMA Northwest Malco & CZ National Post-Vintage Motocross Series Round I: Speedworld Motocross Park The Air Up There By SIEGE WITTMAN, AZ, FEB. 5 lose your eyes and go back... Post-Vintage racing features bikes made between 1975 and 1983, when disco was in. punk was new, girts had flip cuts, PHOTO BY SHELDON HEFLER/SPOT ON PHOTOGRAPHY Honda man Parker chasing him down for second overall. Kohlmeister finished 3-4 for the third spot. The Over 60 classes featured a few key guys from early American motocross. In 1967, promoter and Husqvama importer Edison Dye gave Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty a six-cylinder Ford van with three on the tree. Their job was to drive top C European riders Torsten Hallman, Bengt Aberg and Arnie Kring to Peperell, Massachusetts, where the first Inter-Am was held. The and life rocked! But this is now! Dave Boydston hosted the ninth annual Duel In The Desert. The track was long and fantastic; lap times were up around four minutes. There were also lots of jumps, which meant riders spent some much-needed time gazing at the curvature of the earth. Albert Newmann drove 20 hours from Dallas. Texas, with his very sweet 1977 Yamaha YZI25 to compete in the Historic 125cc Novice class. He later said that he and his brother were summing up lines on the starting gate and decided the far righthand side appeared to be the smoothest, even though the first corner was a left-hander. Bad starts out of the gate left him in back of the pack in both motos, but the line choice helped him regain positions by the exit of the first tum. In the first moto he quickly got the lead and took an easy win. The second moto was a different story: Newmann battled Husqvarna rider Gregg Roth, who eventually won, but Newmann's 1-2 tally gave him the top honors for the day. Texan Gary Davis took the Historic 250cc Novice victory aboard his Bultaco, winning both motos. Behind him, a battle raged among Husqvarna rider Todd Gardner, Bulcaco man Roth and Maico-mounted Mike Miller. Expert Scott Lawson, on his 1976 CR125, beat former Honda and Kawasaki factory rider Tom Benolkin in the 125cc Gran Prix heat, but the Penton rider came back to take the win. In the Gran Prix 250cc Intermediate contest, Husqvarna specialist John Kovalcik held off Todd McGregor and Jim Dallas. However, Kovalcik's real battle on the track was with a rider in a different class: Ultima 500cc rider Eric Wachter. In the Ultima 500cc Expert class, Rick Doughty got the holeshot, but fellow Maico rider Paul Dunne slipped by and held him off, along with Steve Parker, Todd Kohlmeister and 1983 World Champion Brad Lackey in mota one. In the main, it was as Oklahoma's Lanny Henderson mixed it up with Fetty and Teddy Landers, with Henderson finally coming out on top. In the Over 60 Intermediate class was Yamaha vs. KTM vs. Husqvarna. Over 60 Expert class, Husqvarna rider Silverthorn won both motos, while Bultaco man Gordy Ochs finished just behind. A wonderful day of racing just made everyone want more. CN Luckily, Sunday was still to come. SPEEDWORLD MOTOCROSS PARK WmMAN, ARIZONA RESULTS: FEBRUARY 5, 2005 (ROUND 1) HSTRC 115 NOV: I. AMA X-treme International Ice Racing Sports Series Round 7: Office Depot Center Fafard's Day at the Office By GRETCHEN GOODAll FORT LAUDERDALE, Fl, FEB. 4 n Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 200 I World Champion Nick Fafard proved to his peers, as well as to a crowd of 5000. that he could win in the finals of the XilR AMA Sports Series. In previous meetings. he had won in his two heats, qualifying for gate-one position in the finals, but he never managed a victory. But at the Office Depot Center, this was Fafard's night. "He came out in his opening ride and looked his best so far this series," declared XIIR copromoter Anthony Barlow. With six riders in contention for the series championship, this night of intense racing began with Sweden's Kenny Olsson capturing the heat-one win, ahead of Gary Phelps, Barlow and David Meldrum. In heat two, Fafard maae a brilliant start off gate four and led throughout to claim the checkered flag ahead of Scott Courtney, Adrian Newman and Alan Ferrow. In the second round of qualifiers, Fafard executed another solid ride for a victory over Phelps in heat three. Runner-up Kenn:r Olsson (right) and third-place rider Gary Phelps (left) shored in the champagne. 66 MARCH 23, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS Heat four saw Courtney leading, only to be passed by Barlow. Despite four laps of pressure from Meldrum, Olsson grabbed his second win of the night in heat five. With their wins, Fafard, Barlow and Olsson advanced to the finals with front-row pOSitions. The last-chance qualifier allowed Phelps, Courtney and Meldrum a shot in the finals. albeit on the back row. In the main event. Fafard got off to a good start, with Barlow claiming second place off the first corner. A crash reqUired a restart, which Fafard led again, but with Olsson in second and Barlow a close third. In an attempt to pass Olsson at the start of the fourth lap, Barlow opened up a gap, and Phelps took full advantage of it. After exiting turn two, Barlow found himself in fourth place and unable to catch up and without a podium appearance for the first time in four years. With a second-place finish, behind Fafard, Olsson now holds the series points lead by two over Barlow. "It was a great night of racing," stated Barlow. "There was a lot of passing, and it just goes to show how competitive the racing is this year. There have been four different winners in the finals so far. [Speaking] as a promoter, it's great for the series." The XIIR tour remains in Florida for a meeting at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. RESULTS O/A: I. Nick Fafard: 2. Kenny Olsson; J.
