fast out there, and it qUickly tumed into a
race of attrition," said Mike Childress, who
finished seventh overall aboard his XR's
Only Honda XR650R in the Pro race. "I was
able to work my way up through the pack,
but everybocly was fighting too hard for the
lead. I played it safe."
For most of the race, Timmy Weigand
ran second, but he decided to gamble with
the longevity of his gas tank and wound up
on the losing end just before the last lap.
Once Weigand ran out of gas, Kawasaki's
Brian Brown reeled in the slack for second
place, and Daryl Eklund piloted his Honda
to third. But the day belonged to Davis,
and he couldn't have been happier to be
running up front.
"It's funny; a lot of times people don't like
the guy who is winning all the time," Davis
said. ''I'm waiting for that to happen to me,
but at Adelanto, people still cheer me on.
Whether I'm leading by a minute, or just
barely, they are still cheering for me."
Brown returned 5unday to team up with
Kawasaki's Shane Esposito (who won the
250cc Pro class on Saturday, finishing sixth
overall aboard his KX2S0) for the teamrace victory. But just off the Le Mans-style
start, it didn't look good for the duo.

Childress, who highlighted five of his
weekend's top-fIVe finishes with wins in the
Open and Dual-Sport races, launched into a
sizeable lead by the end of the first lap,
when he handed the bike over to local
supercross racer Ross Garcia. By the end of
the second lap, with virtually no experience
on the big Honda XR650R and the Adelanto
course, a sketchy Garcia gave up the lead to
Esposito.
Again, Childress took charge of the lead.
But soon thereafter, Esposito and Brown
broke away to claim the $3000 victory
purse.
When asked to sum up his thoughts
about why he always does so well in
Adelanto, Davis had a simple answer.
"I feel like I do well here because I know
how to prepare for it," he said. "Suspension
is one of the most important things, and
with my experience, I know how to set my
bike up."
