Honda's two factory teams, Johnny Campbell/Steve Hengeveld and Robby Bell/Kendall Norman, may have been negatively affected in trying to race the Laughlin Hare Scrambles a week after the Tecate/SCORE San Felipe 250. "I think it took some toll on us," Campbell said when asked to compare racing at Laughlin on a Precision Concepts/Honda Pro Oils/HRCA-backed CRF450R to racing at San Felipe on a similarly sponsored XR6S0R. "It's two different terrains and two different styles of riding and two different types of bike," Hengeveld said. "Just a week on a 450 trying to get acclimated after you've been riding a 650 for a few months really isn't enough." Norman added, "But we gave it a shot. The adjustment wasn't too bad, but San Felipe really is a tough race. It took a good part of my week just to recover from riding whoops all day for a week straight [while prerunningJ." Best in the Desert is working on a combined ATV/bike/buggy race next year that would go from an undisclosed start in New Mexico south across the border and finish near Chihuahua, Mexico, for a race distance between 1100 and 1200 miles. Nothing is confirmed at this date, however. Lance Smail realized this Laughlin didn't offer typical desert conditions. "I don't think it was desert desert," he said. "We covered a lot of terrain, but it was real technical. I had a great time." He did admit, however, to close contact with the dreaded cactus. "Nothing too bad. I'm bleeding on my arms, but everyone is. I've got tons of them in my boots. 1got way smoother on the last lap. I knew how to miss them - you couldn't even get near them or they'd grab you. That was kind of unique." David Pearson's first Laughlin overall came in 2000; he also won last year. Russell Pearson won in 200 I and 2002 with Ty Davis. Nick Pearson was second overall, first 2S0cc Pro, in 2003, having ridden nearly the entire race solo. Coincidentally, all three Pearsons were assigned to ride the more technical eastern loop. Their win keeps Esposito and David Pearson in the hunt in series points. As Pearson said, "Parker [the first round] didn't go very well for us; we blew up our bike a mile and a half off the start there," Pearson said. "We were hoping to switch places with the Hondas - the Hondas got first in Parker and we got fifth. We were hoping to switch here [which was the case], so 1think we'll be pretty much tied on points now, so we're still in the series. Shane and 1are going to do the rest of the series on a 10<500. Maybe at the last round at Henderson we'll ride a 450 if it comes out [by then]." CYCLE NEWS • MARCH 23, 2005 57
