Wood and his teammate Seo" Harwell (2) finished one-two in the Expert Heavyweight Supersport final. What Gobert learned about the track is "that it's still going to be a drafting race. It's not going to be anything special. There's not going to be a breakaway or anything." McCormack had been to Daytona last year but was new to the new layout. He began by winning the troubled Acropovic GTU Amateur race. The race was stopped on the fourth lap by a crash in the International Horseshoe. Fuel on the track brought out a host of equipment including two fire trucks that hosed down the track. A series of eight orange traffic pylons separated the wet track from the dry and racing eventually resumed. When it did, McCormack went on to win over Miamian Gustavo Laya. McCormack said the new layout reminded him of the tight tracks back home in Ireland and the UK, where he'll race a Suzuki GSX-R I 000. Last year, he rode a Yamaha R6 in the British Supersport Series. McCormack mistimed his run from the chicane to the finish line in the Amateur Middleweight Superbike class, also redflagged early, and was draft-passed by Tony Leong, losing by .029 of a second. "I knew he was behind me," McCormack said in a thick Irish brogue. "I made a mistake in the chicane. I tried too hard." In Sunday's Amateur Middieweight GP race, McCormack finished second again, this time to the quicker Honda of Gustavo Laya. eN DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA RESULTS: MARCH 6, 2005 (ROUND 1) EXPERT GT LIGHTS: I Dan Bllansky (Bue): 2.
