Saturday Night Under the Lights Race 3: Sunset Tavern and Marina Nafzger King of Koshkonong By DAN SCHMITT LAKE KOSHKONONG, WI, JAN. 29 reat weather greeted the racers and fans at the weekly short-track ice race held under the lights at the Sunset Tavern and Marina. The action started with the Over SO race. Jerry "Mr. Ice" Westhouse blasted off the line on the Newman/Haus Honda 450. Dan Schmitt mounted a battle for second with William Berge but had a transmission problem and had to settle for third. In the 250cc Amateur final, Serge Figliuzzi, who had run solid in his heat race, crashed in turn two on the second lap. Jim Younger took the lead. Dan Biddle moved up to challenge but ran out of time. Bryan Austin grabbed the lead in the Open Amateur class, with John Cooper right there. Younger made a charge, taking the inside line. Going three abreast down the straight, Younger slipped into the lead. Cooper got by Austin, and then, at the white nag, Jake Kaiser moved to third, as Younger took the victory. Kaiser smoked the field in the 200cc Amateur class. Jake Marx ran second. Tiffany Figliuzzi and Max. Geib contested third; at the nag, Geib took the nod. G S6 Rotax.·mounted Ken Hall ran the far outside line but could not beat Kawasaki jockeys Roy Nafzger and Terry Hahn in the Over 40 final. Nafzger took the win. After battling with Westhouse, Hahn and Californian Gary Rogers in the opening laps, Nafzger broke away to score the victory in the Pro class. Rogers went back and forth with Westhouse and took third, behind Hahn. In the Vintage race, Eric Johnson, on the Vintage flat-track Honda, stayed just ahead of a fast-dosing Mike Duvall. Right behind this duel. Dan Luchon, on the 7S0cc Triumph, battled with SOOcc Honda-mounted Mike Dugan. As Johnson took the win, Luchon took third on the outside. In the Dash For Cash, it was a struggle for Nafzger to catch the Amateurs after starting out of turn four. With two laps to go, Nafzger made it a four-way battle for the win. John Cooper stepped up, moving to third. Austin held on for the lead, as Nafzger tried to find a way through. Then Rogers joined the fray. World Championship Ice Racing Series Round 5: Tucson Convention Center Mann on Fire on the Ice By AMANDA URSINI TUCSON, AZ, JAN. 29 "The 29th annual World Championship Ice RacI ing Series came home to its roots this weekend. The Tucson Convention Center was one of the original four arenas that hosted the inaugural World Championship Series in 1977. Coincidentally, Tucson is also the birthplace and hometown of ICE/WSRA president Gary Densford. No fewer than 20 Pro speedway riders registered to contest the National, which was also the first leg of the 2005 Triple Crown of Ice RaCing. Heat racing was intense, as only three racers could transfer from them directly to the main, and the next six to the last-chance qualifier. Heat-race winners in the first of the two rounds were Cary, North Carolina's Ronny Kemp, Denver's Aaron Laird, San Bernardino, California's Charlie Venegas, Corona, California's Charlie Cooley, and James Mann from Bolton, England. The second round of heats saw winning performances by Mann, Cooley, Kemp, Venegas and Georgetown, California's John "Mountain Man" Grant. Stellar performances by Kemp, Mann and Venegas sent them directly to the main event. Sparks, Nevada's Bill Hermant, Bakersfield, California's Brad Sauer, 2004 Rookie of the Year Tyler Hansen from Missoula, Montana, and Cooley. Laird and Grant still had to battle their Winner James Mann (center), runner-up Ronny Kemp (left) and third-place man John Grant (right) enjoy the spoils of victory at round five of the World Championship Ice Racing Series in Tucson, Arizona.
