By PERRIS HIUTON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 29 ebuting the new four-stroke Montesa Cota 4RT in ITS competition under partly cloudy skies, Team Alvaka's Oli Thordarson took the Master-class win at the sixth round of the Lewisport USA ITS Winter Series. Powered by a fuelinjected 249cc HRC power plant in a twin-spar aluminum frame, the 4RT is the most expensive trials bike yet, retailing at just under $7500. "It is very sweet - worth every penny," Thordarson said. "It is hard to believe they got a four-stroke to run the way it does." There was a nip-and-tuck battle between Thordarson and Brian Hannon. Still getting used to the new machine, Thordarson dropped three points in the first three sections, while Hannon cleaned them all on his Sherco. Then, on a three-section period bridging the first two loops, Hannon gave back the cushion and more as Thordarson cleaned his way into first. D Canepa's Going to the Barber CHOWCHILLA, CA, JAN. 29 Chris Canepa razed 'em in both the Open A and 250cc-and-Up Money events in Chowchilla, California. DJ Sharkey worked the track to garner a second-place finish. Sharkey got the holeshot in the Open FourStroke event, but on lap five he and Briar changed places. Briar got the lead out exiting the fourth turn and held it to the finish. Sharkey finished second, and Bronson rounded out the winners' circle. Briar continues to be a dominating force in the 85cc A class, taking first this week, followed by Michael Avila and Mike Martin. Martin finished in front in the Open TwoStroke class, with Bronson behind him. Sharkey got the holeshot again in the 2s0cc class and led this seven-rider pack around the track from pole to pole. Rick Hocking came out to enjoy the races this weekend, winning the Old-Timers A event aboard his KLH Racing Presents-sponsored Honda 450. Mark Biscardi and Johnny Larson followed. Steve Eddings and Darol Fishman led the Old-Timers B event to the finish. Augie Balistreri, a new Chowchilla rider, finished the Old-Timers C class in front. Cody Bergen was flying aboard his Honda 500 in the Open C event. This high school sophomore has a plan. Active in the ROTC and working toward his goal of becoming a Marine officer when he graduates high school, Bergen challenges himself daily to excel. Steve Hill has traction, leading the Vet A class home in front of Clay Chambers and Mark Biscardi. Mike Middleton led the Senior B class around the track, and Steve Runnels won the Senior C contest. Chris Canepa had decided he wasn't going to shave until he won. As he was the victor in both the Open A and 2S0cc-and-Up Money events aboard his Engines Only-sponsored Honda 450, Canepa is on his way to the barber. Brandon Bergen came through the pack from the fourth position to finish second in the Open A event, followed by Austin HelWig. Joseph Hernandez and Chuck Monasmith finished the 250cc-and-Up event in second and third, respectively. Hernandez got the holes hot and held that lead until lap 10, when Canepa Bronson Bauman, riding on a new tire, was on the gas from start to finish, taking the 65ce win. Logan Lohmeier, who has continued to improve his riding skills each week, finished behind Bauman. Lohmeier also was first in the 100cc Stock C class. Justin Petz got by Joey Santos for a mota victory in the IsOcc class, but Santos didn't let that happen in the main event, finishing first. Petz and Leah Faro followed. Briar Bauman took the 100cc Modified-class MARCH 9, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS In a mud section that was getting more treacherous as the day progressed, Thordarson dropped a three on the second loop, giving Hannon a two-point lead. Disaster struck for Hannon on the last loop, where he took his only fives of the day, in the hillside section two and the mud-infested final trap. Thordarson responded with only a pair of aces, giving him a comfortable six-point win. Chase Harker came from way back on his Sherco to win the highly competitive Intermediate class. Harker fived the highly technical first section, leaving him in fourth place after the initial loop. A one-point second loop put him in a tie with Gas Gas-mounted Dean Pekar with one loop remaining, with Montesa Cota 31SR rider Don Williams lurking a point back in third with a loop remaining. Pekar grabbed the lead back in section one with an outstanding two-point ride, with three being the norm. He stunned his competitors by dropping a point in the relatively easy second
